The story of World War Z was written by Matthew Michael Carnahan and J. Michael Straczynski. Carnahan also co-wrote the screenplay with Drew Goddard and Damon Lindelof. It centers on an ex-UN investigator who travels around the world searching for a cure for the zombie outbreak. The film had its world premiere at London's Empire Cinema and was released theatrically by Paramount on June 21, 2013. It received positive reviews and grossed $540 million at the box office. The cast included Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, James Badge Dale, and David Morse.

In 2012, the creators planned the film as a trilogy, which would feature gunfights and horror tropes. Although it was shelved initially, the project was later revived, and several people were attached to it over the years.

At one point, David Fincher was set to direct, with Pitt reprising his role. However, Fincher became involved with Mindhunter, and the project was eventually shelved. Fans eagerly awaiting a sequel will be pleased to hear that Paramount has finally decided to move forward with the project.
