Paranormal Activity is a horror film franchise that began in 2007 with the namesake film. It was acquired by Paramount and was released in 2009, becoming a commercial success. Before its release, the studio had ordered some modifications to that version. Since then, the franchise has expanded and has seen multiple installments.

The most recent one is Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, which was released in 2021. It was the seventh entry in the franchise. Recently, the studio has ordered an eighth installment in the ever-growing franchise.

So let's explore all the details available about this forthcoming horror film.

Paramount orders Paranormal Activity return

Paramount Pictures and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster are developing an eighth Paranormal Activity film. The film will be produced by Jason Blum, James Wan, and Oren Peli (who had directed the first installment). Wan's Atomic Monster and Blumhouse merged in 2024.

Judson Scott, Alayna Glasthal, and Michael Clear will serve as executive producers of the film. The production banners will be Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, Room 101, and Solana Films. In addition to production, Paramount is also handling the film's global distribution.

The makers are yet to reveal further details about this project. Deadline reports that it's a priority for Paramount right now.

Paranormal Activity was the first film in the franchise and was written, edited, and directed by Oren Peli. It follows a couple who suspect their home is haunted by a mysterious entity and set up cameras throughout the house to document the disturbances. Produced on a shoestring budget of just $15,000, the film premiered at Screamfest in 2007, where it caught the attention of Paramount Pictures. The studio acquired the film, altered its original ending, and released it theatrically in 2009. It went on to earn approximately $194.2 million worldwide, giving it one of the most impressive box-office returns for a modern horror film.

Since then, the studio has churned out several installments of this found footage storyline. They were released in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2015. The most recent was called Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, and it was released in 2021. It was directed by William Eubank while Christopher Landon wrote the script. Since the second film, Peli has only served as the producer of the installments.

It has emerged as the most popular found footage horror franchise since The Blair Witch Project.
