The upcoming film will mark her directorial debut. Since its announcement, there has reportedly been considerable buzz around the film, possibly due to the well-received nature of the source material. Let's find out all the details about the film that are available.
All about The Eyes Are the Best Part film adaptation
Past Lives star Greta Lee is donning the directorial hat for the first time, and she will be adapting The Eyes Are the Best Part. Joanne Lee and Matt Jackson will produce it under their Jackson Pictures banner. Actress Lulu Wang is also producing it for her banner Local Time along with Dani Melia. Meanwhile, Monika Kim, the author of the original novel, serves as executive producer, and Searchlight Pictures will distribute the film. The makers are yet to reveal the film's cast members.
The novel The Eyes Are the Best Part is set in Los Angeles and centres around a Korean-American woman named Ji-won, whose father has an affair with a woman. Subsequently, he leaves his family for her. This leads Ji-won onto a path where she turns into a serial killer. The novel was released by Erewhon Books in 2024 and received mostly positive reviews from literary critics.
Starting her career in 2006 with an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Greta Lee went on to star in several projects, including Inside Amy Schumer, Seriously Distracted, New Girl, Don't Let the Pigeon Do Storytime!, and The Morning Show.
Some of her film works include Sisters, Gemini, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and Pottersville. She will be next seen in Tron: Ares and A House of Dynamite, among others.
In an interview with Library Journal, Monika Kim revealed that the book's story came from her frustration and rage.
"I think it’s fair to say that this book came from a deep-seated anger that had been brewing in me for a long time but really erupted during the pandemic. At that time, the Asian community saw a rash of violence and an increase in hate crimes—our elders randomly attacked, women pushed onto train tracks, people being murdered in cold blood. And then, in 2021, we were horrified by the news about the killing of six Asian women at an Atlanta spa. The killer, a 21-year-old white man, claimed that he had a sex addiction and saw the spas as a “temptation he wanted to eliminate.”"
With Lee helming the project, we can expect a faithful adaptation of a psychological horror book.
