Pedro Pascal has portrayed a wide range of roles across genres, from fantasy to science fiction. In The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Marvel’s bold new dive into its most iconic family, Pedro Pascal takes on the role of Reed Richards. He admitted he initially questioned whether he was the right choice to play the character, also known as the smartest man in the Marvel universe.

Speaking to Empire, Pedro Pascal talked about how he was skeptical about starring as Reed Richards and didn’t have full faith in Matt Shakman’s casting of him. Pascal told the outlet:

“I wasn’t skeptical at all of this as a piece… But I was skeptical over [Shakman’s] choice to cast me. I was questioning if I would serve it as best as it was meant to be served - to convincing as an astrophysicist, as a father, a husband.”

However, as he stepped into the shoes of Marvel’s First Family patriarch, the actor gained more and more faith in the character and its limitless layers. Expanding on how Richards contains multitudes, Pascal continued:

“I see a limitless amount of layers to this character. He does the ultimate version of catastrophising. A brain that has an overview of threats on a mathematical level, but also being emotionally available. It was a fascinating contradiction.”

With Matt Shakman at the helm and a script that promises both heart and spectacle, Fantastic Four: First Steps is positioned to deliver more than just a superhero film. According to early commentary from the cast and crew, the film also serves as a deeper character study.

Marvel Studios is cracking open a new chapter in the multiverse with The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and it could very well overturn the entire MCU. Directed by WandaVision’s Matt Shakman and set on an alternate Earth styled after the 1960s, the film blends retro-futuristic aesthetics with cosmic themes.

At the center of this bold reintroduction is Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, the brilliant and emotionally frayed Mister Fantastic. Joining him are Vanessa Kirby as the fiercely intelligent (and now pregnant) Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as the firebrand Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm — the heart behind the stone.

The film also stars Ralph Ineson as the towering Galactus and Julia Garner as a fresh, possibly terrifying take on the Silver Surfer. With additional cast members like John Malkovich, Paul Walter Hauser, Natasha Lyonne, and Sarah Niles, expect surprises in every corner of the cosmos.

The script is being written by Josh Friedman and Eric Pearson, with music by Michael Giacchino. The film will launch Marvel’s sixth phase, opening up several exciting narratives the studio has planned.

Fantastic Four: First Steps will be in theaters on 25 July, 2025.
