Across Pierce Brosnan's decades-spanning career, one role has stood out more than others, and it is his reign as James Bond. The actor took on the shiny legacy of the iconic spy between 1995 and 2002, starring in GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough, and Die Another Day. Even as it has been two decades now since he passed the mantle to Daniel Craig, the actor remains just as enthusiastic to portray Bond on screen again.
Speaking to Radio Times, Brosnan showed his excitement for the role if Denis Villeneuve, who is directing the next Bond film, agrees to it. The actor stated:
“My wife Keely [Shaye Smith] and I have been listening to the drumbeat of expectation of who’s going to be the next James Bond. There are many great candidates out there, and I’m sure they’re going to make it a spectacle of delight. I don’t think anyone wants to see a craggy, 72-year-old Bond, but if [next 007 director Denis] Villeneuve had something up his sleeve I would look at it in a heartbeat. Why not? It’s great entertainment. It could be lots of laughs. Bald caps, prosthetics… who knows??”
After Craig retired from the role, there have been talks of who will fill in as Bond next, with Glen Powell and Aaron Taylor-Johnson coming out as two strong contenders.
In another interview with Saga Magazine, Pierce Brosnan shared a few words of cheer for whoever steps in as James Bond next, as he said:
“I’m so excited to see the next man come on the stage and to see a whole new exuberance and life for this character…. I adore the world of James Bond,” he said, “It’s been very good to me. It’s the gift that keeps giving. And I’m just a member of the audience now, sitting back, saying: ‘Show us what you’re going to do.'”
Pierce Brosnan's reign as James Bond
From GoldenEye in 1995 to Die Another Day in 2002, Pierce Brosnan’s Bond was equal parts charm, mischief, and calculated menace. He walked away from explosions looking untouchable, while stuntmen like Wayne Michaels, Jacques Malnuit, and BJ Worth did the impossible so he could make it look effortless. Brosnan’s Bond also infiltrated living rooms through six iconic video games, starting with Rareware’s GoldenEye 007.
As the series progressed, the films became increasingly extravagant. Die Another Day, his final outing, even featured invisible cars and DNA-altering villains.
Despite this, Pierce Brosnan's Bond left an indelible mark. Whether he will return to screens as Bond might be a far-fetched hope, but fans would love to see him back with a suit and a gun, and a mission. As of now, speculations about the next James Bond are still active, with no confirmed contender so far.
