During the November 17 podcast episode of Broad Ideas with Rachel Bilson & Olivia Allen, Gayheart opened up about the Grey's Anatomy star's ALS diagnosis:

"I am definitely trying to show [my daughters] that we show up for people no matter what. And he is our family, he is your father. We show up and we try to do it with some dignity and some grace and just get through it, and that we will get through it the best we can," she said. "I mean, it's super complicated for me."

Rebecca Gayheart and Eric Dane have been married since 2004. In 2018, the former filed for divorce, though she rescinded her filings weeks before it was announced that Dane suffered from ALS in March 2025.

“I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter," he told PEOPLE at the time.

During her recent podcast episode, however, Rebecca Gayheart confirmed that she and her husband have "been separated for eight years," and that their kids "live with me 100% of the time." The actress shares daughters Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13, with Dane.

"There's been lots of just stuff, other stuff," she continued. "I try to stay optimistic, though, about it all. I'm trying to learn from it and role model, for them, how to go through something like this, which is really hard."

However, she said that helping her kids while their dad struggles with ALS has been difficult.

"I don't know if I'm doing it well or if I'm … doing it in the wrong way or the right way. I'm just showing up. I'm showing up, and I'm trying to be there for them, and I guess time will tell," she said. "They’re good girls who are just going through a lot."

However, Rebecca Gayheart admitted to "definitely experiencing growth as a person, as a human being" as she supports her ex.

"It's all very humbling. And I think one piece of this that I hope I'm passing to my kids is the idea that you can show up for someone and be there for them, but you also have to show up for yourself, and that this is life. Life, sadly, is just moments, good and bad, strung together. There's gonna be good ones, there's gonna be bad ones, there's gonna be exciting ones, it's gonna be really sad."

The Mayo Clinic states that ALS is a progressive nervous system disease that afflicts the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing loss of muscle control. It is fatal, has no cure, and impacts the afflicted individual's ability to move, speak, eat, and even breathe.
