Warner Bros. has released the first poster and the release date for the highly anticipated A Minecraft Movie 2, and with a two-year-long wait and a cryptic poster, fans are already rushing in to hype up the sequel. Shared across social media platforms, the poster features two iconic Minecraft pickaxes, with the release date visible in the game's block lettering.
The sequel has seen much anticipation and now finally has a release date of July 23, 2027. Although plot and cast details are under wraps as of now, there's some speculation on what A Minecraft Movie might revolve around. In the first film's ending, a new character, Alex, played by Kate McKinnon and Alica May Connolly, was teased, who could lead the second film after Jack Black's stint as Steve. Alex and Steve are the primary playable characters in the game, and a new plot surrounding Alex could be what the crew is working on, although no confirmations have come as of now.
A Minecraft Movie 2 will be directed by Jared Hess again, with a script written by Hess & Chris Galletta, who also worked on the first film. In April, Hess expressed his desire to make a sequel to A Minecraft Movie, as he told Deadline,
"There were so many things that we didn't tap into that we wanted to. I would have a blast doing the sequel, and it seems like there's already talk about it happening, so I'm super excited. It'll be so much fun to go back into the world. The fans are just having such a good time. We teased it in the end credits, and the fans seem to be going wild for it."
More details about A Minecraft Movie
A Minecraft Movie has been one of the most successful films of the year, becoming the second-highest-grossing video game film of all time with a near-billion-dollar box office collection against a budget of $150 million.
One of the best things about the film is its cast, which includes Jack Black as Steve, Jason Momoa as Garrett, Emma Myers and Sebastian Hansen as Natalie and Henry, Danielle Brooks as Dawn, and Jennifer Coolidge as the hilariously chaotic Vice Principal Marlene. Rachel House voices Malgosha, Matt Berry brings Nitwit to life, and Hess voices General Chungus. Cameo appearances from Minecraft YouTubers and lead designer Jens Bergensten, plus a pig wearing a crown to honor Technoblade, give fans that extra wink.
The film opened to mixed reviews, but the game's popularity and demand contributed to the film's success, making it the third-highest-grossing film of 2025. With accomplishments like that, it's not surprising that Warner Bros. has greenlit a sequel, although anticipation is now building up for what the sequel may bring to fans.
A Minecraft Movie 2 will be in theaters on July 23, 2027.
