Resident Evil is a video game franchise in the horror genre that has inspired several films.
Zach Cregger, the director of Barbarian and the recently released Weapons, is working on bringing the story to the big screen. He will be helming the reboot version for Sony. Recently, the director said that he will be branching out from the world as shown in the video game and won't focus on telling Leon's story once again.
Let's find out exactly what he has said in detail.
Resident Evil helmer Zach Cregger talks about not retelling Leon's story
Zach Cregger recently gave an interview to Inverse where he revealed that his upcoming Resident Evil film won't be retelling Leon's story, but it will have an original idea. Cregger, who has been working on the reboot for Sony, said:
“I am the biggest worshiper of the games, so I’m telling a story that is a love letter to the games and follows the rules of the games. It is obedient to the lore of the games, it’s just a different story. I’m not going to tell Leon’s story, because Leon’s story is told in the games. [Fans] already have that.”
In March, the director had made it clear that his version is built on the video game, but it will have its own story and characters. At the CinemaCon, he said:
“There’s a moment that comes in every moment of every Resident Evil game where you find yourself standing in the mouth of a dark passageway. One shot in the gun is left. You know that something horrible is waiting for you in that darkness, that awful moment where you have to will yourself."
"That’s something that every Resident Evil game has perfected and has kept me and millions of other players returning to the series for decades.”
He added,
“My movie will be built in the spirit of those games and follows one central protagonist from point A to point B, as they descend deeper into hell.”
Cregger has written the film with Shay Hatten. The makers are yet to reveal details about its cast and other aspects. Since the 1996 Capcom game was released, there have been seven film adaptations, a reboot, and a Netflix series.
