The serene luxury of Necker Island - Sir Richard Branson’s famed Caribbean retreat for royalty, world leaders, and Hollywood stars - has been struck by tragedy.

Executive sous chef Sihle Somdaka, originally from Cape Town, died after suffering a head injury in what authorities described as a late-night buggy crash on the private island. He was 35.

Police in the British Virgin Islands confirmed that officers from the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) were called to the scene and have launched a full investigation into the accident.

A police spokeswoman stated that Sihle Somdaka was brought to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Another individual sustained “non-life threatening injuries.”

Acting Commissioner Jacqueline Vanterpool expressed condolences, saying:

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased. This is a tragic event, and the RVIPF is committed to conducting a thorough investigation.”

According to sources cited by The Sun, the incident followed a farewell party at Necker Island’s Great House, an opulent clifftop property known for its sweeping views of the Caribbean and once Sir Richard Branson and his wife Joan's residence.

Sihle Somdaka reportedly left the gathering close to midnight, taking one of the island’s electric buggies down a steep road. An insider revealed:

“He was found unconscious and appeared to have sustained a head injury."

Emergency medics from both Necker and nearby Moskito Island attempted resuscitation before arranging transport by boat to Tortola’s Peebles Hospital.

Sir Richard Branson "deeply saddened" by Sihle Somdaka's passing

A Virgin Limited Edition spokesperson described Sihle Somdaka as “a hugely talented and exceptional member of the Necker Island family,” adding:

“We are all devastated by this news. Our utmost priority is the wellbeing of their family and friends, and that of our team, and we are doing everything we can to support them all during this very difficult time.”

Sir Richard Branson was not on the island at the time but has been in contact with the chef’s family and staff. An insider told The Sun:

“He is understandably deeply saddened by the incident.”

Sihle Somdaka’s career spanned fine dining establishments across the Middle East. A father of two, Somkada had built an impressive culinary career that traversed prestigious kitchens in Kuwait and Qatar before joining Sir Richard Branson’s exclusive team.

The chef's social media page often reflected the mix of hard work and paradise, with snapshots of turquoise waters, jet skiing, and images of the dishes he prepared for some of the world’s most influential guests.

Necker Island, which Sir Richard Branson purchased in 1978, has long been a haven for the rich and famous, hosting everyone from Princess Diana and Nelson Mandela to Barack Obama, Harry Styles, and Mariah Carey.
