Robert Irwin is looking back fondly on his late dad Steve Irwin and actor Russel Crowe's friendship.
Robert, 21, spoke to People Magazine for an exclusive interview about Crowe as he supported him for his new film, Nuremberg, at this year's AFI Festival. Held on October 24 in California, the Dancing With The Stars contender was present with his mother, Terri Irwin.
“I've known him for as long as I've been alive,” he said of the Gladiator actor, 61. “I have some very early memories, actually. Some of the earliest memories of me with my dad were also with Russell, which is really special.” He added, “I'm really grateful that I have someone in my life who ... he's actually been there to, in a way, keep my dad alive in my life. He has so many stories to share of him and dad, and I feel like I build an even better picture of my dad when I'm around Russell.”

During his conversation with People Magazine, Robert Irwin also shared that Russel Crowe offered a broader insight into his dad than what he got from his own family:
“Russell and dad were just great mates, so it's a different perspective than when you're hearing about your mom,” he explained. “It's meaningful. He's someone that I look up to and has truly inspired me.”
Steve Irwin died in 2006 at the age of 44. He succumbed to a stingray attack off the coast of Australia. He left behind his wife, Terri, and their two kids, Bindi, 27, and Robert Irwin, all of whom have been working at their own Australia Zoo.
Following his appearance on Dancing With the Stars alongside partner Witney Carson, Radar has reported that discussions are underway about getting him to host the UK survival show, I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!, for the U.S. audience.
"Robert is a natural. He has got the charisma, the humor, and that genuine love for the outdoors that Americans absolutely adore," a source close to the industry said. "Everyone sees him as the next big global wildlife presenter, and the timing couldn't be better."
Robert Irwin has been active in the spotlight in recent years, which, according to the insider, could work in his favor:
"The reaction to Robert has been overwhelming," the insider noted. "He's funny, polite, down-to-earth. American audiences can't get enough of him."
