Legendary Australian conservationist and zookeeper Steve Irwin's son, Robert Irwin, gets emotional about his late father in a recent interview. It has been almost twenty years since Steve passed away in a fatal accident when he was attacked by a stingray on September 4, 2006, while he was shooting in the Great Barrier Reef. Robert Irwin, who followed in his father's footsteps, has also become a conservationist and zookeeper.
It is not only Steve's son, Robert Irwin, who is continuing the work he was so passionate about, but his daughter, Bindi, and wife, Terri, are equally involved. The entire Irwin family continues to work hard to raise awareness for conservation.
The 21-year-old Robert Irwin recently appeared on BBC 2's The Scott Mills Breakfast Show, where he got emotional and teared up after listening to his father's "ultimate goal" for the future. A clip from the interview was shared on social media, particularly Instagram, on June 24, 2025.
In the video, Scott Mills, with Robert's consent, plays a clip of Steve Irwin, in which he discusses his hopes and dreams, and is asked:
"Is there anything that would wanna make me give away what I’m doing now?"
The late conservationist and zookeeper, who was also a TV personality, environmentalist, and wildlife educator, while reflecting upon the question goes ahead and says that there is indeed something, and that would be when his kids will carry on his work, while upholding his ideas and continue his legacy, committing to wildlife conservation. Then Steve adds:
"I guarantee you, it will be the proudest moment of my life."
Steve, who was nicknamed The Crocodile Hunter, continues and says:
"And my job will be done, like my mum and my dad. Then, and only then, will I know that I have achieved my ultimate goal. To be able to stand aside and let them run up my mission."
Robert Irwin, after listening to what his father had to say, became emotional and teared up, and said:
"It's emotional to hear that."
He continued and said:
"It means so much"
Robert further added:
"And when you dedicate your life legacy, it really makes you think about how we all get to create our legacy."
Robert Irwin is about to join Dancing with the Stars

Robert Irwin, besides being a conservationist and zookeeper, is also a wildlife photographer and actor. Not to mention, with 7.6 million followers on Instagram, he is also quite popular and active on social media. His Instagram handle mostly contains pictures of him with various animals.
Interestingly, like his sister Bindi, who was the winner of the show in 2015, Robert will also be joining the dance reality show Dancing with the Stars Season 34. He will be competing for the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy. According to Robert, the reason for competing in the show is to bring awareness to animal conservation.
