Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was released on December 16, 2016, by Walt Disney. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the film met with positive critical response and ended up grossing around $1.059 billion. The film served as a prequel to George Lucas' 1977 Star Wars and was the first of the anthology.

Edwards, who has directed the upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth, recently spoke about the space opera franchise. The director expressed that he is done with the Star Wars franchise and said,

"I’m very happy to move on and do my thing.”

Let us get into the details of this story.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story director reveals he is done with the franchise

Gareth Edwards is gearing up for the release of his forthcoming film Jurassic World: Rebirth. It is scheduled for release on July 2, 2025. A stand-alone follow-up to Jurassic World Dominion, released in 2022, the film is the seventh entry in the Jurassic Park series.

Ahead of its release, the director was asked if he would helm another Star Wars film. Speaking to Business Insider, Edwards responded that he has moved on from the Star Wars world. He said,

I’m very happy to move on and do my thing.”

While Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was well received, Edwards doesn't seem to agree with it.

“I don’t agree with it, but I appreciate it. I’m very grateful that people say nice things.”

Edwards said that he gives more importance to how a film will be received years from now instead of its immediate box office result. He said,

“What you have to keep in your pocket as you go through making other films is that it’s not about how people feel the day it gets released, it’s how people feel about it 10, 20 years from now. When you make a movie, you’re living at least a year from now, you’re trying to imagine what it’s like, all these decisions you’re making, what they are going to be like a year from now when this movie is released, what’s the audience going to think?”

He further elaborated on his point,

“And as the movie comes out, you go, ‘I’m going to pretend I’m living 10 years from now, and it doesn’t matter what people say in the moment. It’s the kid who comes up to you 20 years from now and goes, ‘Oh my god, I loved that movie!’ I think that’s the reward.”

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story starred Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, and Jiang Wen, among others.
