Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte, once one of the most decorated athletes in the pool, appeared to be under significant financial strain after his split from wife Kayla Rae Reid. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Lochte’s net worth currently stands at $300,000.
The couple, now separated, reportedly owed roughly $270,000 in unpaid bills and liens. Among them, nearly $100,000 had to be paid back in taxes to the IRS from 2021 and 2022.
A December 2024 filing from the Fletcher Park Owner’s Association noted a lien on their Gainesville home totaling $2,231.76. The amount stemmed from “special assessments, late fees, costs of collection [and] attorney’s fees,” according to the filing dated December 9. Healthcare costs added to their financial burden. Shands Teaching Hospital and Clinic lodged two separate claims—$127,977.73 for care in November 2023 and $39,720.15 for treatment received in February 2024.
Ryan Lochte, 40, is the second-most decorated Olympic swimmer after Michael Phelps.
Ryan Lochte’s fall from grace: From Olympic glory to Rio scandal

At one point, Ryan Lochte had it all: Olympic medals, multi-million-dollar deals, and a glittering public image. But that changed dramatically after the 2016 Rio Olympics.
As reported by The Mirror UK, Ryan Lochte's fortunes began to fall after an incident in Brazil that caught global headlines. He originally claimed he’d been held at gunpoint during a confrontation near a gas station. But once Brazilian police looked into the matter, they claimed that Lochte and three other swimmers had actually vandalized the property before being stopped by armed security guards.
The authorities challenged Ryan Lochte's account and labeled it misleading. Speaking to NBC later, Lochte admitted he "over-exaggerated that story." The fallout was immediate. Brand deals with Speedo and Ralph Lauren disappeared, and governing bodies, USA Swimming and the U.S. Olympic Committee, suspended him for 10 months.
Ryan Lochte then shared his perspective on Instagram and Twitter (now X). He issued a statement regarding the controversial incident in Rio. He explained that he had held off on speaking publicly until his teammates were permitted to leave Brazil.
"I want to apologize for my behavior last weekend — for not being more careful and candid in how I described the events of that early morning and for my role in taking the focus away from the many athletes fulfilling their dreams of participating in the Olympics," Ryan Lochte's post read.
Ryan Lochte did not directly reference the widely reported gas station vandalism or the dispute with employees. However, his message pointed to a perceived sense of being threatened, even as he admitted he mishandled the situation.
"It's traumatic to be out late with your friends in a foreign country — with a language barrier — and have a stranger point a gun at you and demand money to let you leave, But regardless of the behavior of anyone else that night, I should have been much more responsible in how I handled myself and for that I am sorry to my teammates, my fans, my fellow competitors, my sponsors, and the hosts of this great event," the swimmer shared.
Ryan Lochte and Kayla Reid Lochte split after seven years of marriage:
Ryan Lochte and Kayla Reid Lochte’s seven-year marriage officially came to an end, as Kayla announced their separation via Instagram on Wednesday, June 4. In a heartfelt message shared with her followers, Kayla confirmed that she had initiated the divorce earlier this year, calling it one of the most difficult chapters of her life.
“Earlier this year, I made the hard decision to end my marriage after deep prayer and reflection, I hold marriage in the highest regard, so this has been one of the most painful, revealing, and challenging seasons of my life. I’ve been hesitant to share until I could do so from a place of healing — not from fresh, open wounds,” she wrote.
She went on to reflect on the personal challenges that led to her decision, adding,
“Sometimes we face trials we didn’t choose or see coming. And in those moments, we’re forced to make the hardest decisions to protect our peace, our children, and our future. I’ve come to the understanding that staying isn’t always the most loving decision someone can make. For me, leaving was an act of love — for those around me and for myself.”
