Development of Mamma Mia 3 was first announced in 2020. Then, COVID-19 happened, and the pandemic caused some delays. We still don't have the third film in the musical franchise but things are seemingly coming back on track, with Deadline reporting of a potential candidate for the next movie.

American singer and songwriter Sabrina Carpenter is reportedly being considered for the film, though we should wait for an official confirmation first. Carpenter is an actor too, and has appeared in 10 feature films already, including Horns (2013), The Short History of the Long Road (2019), and Work It (2020).

The first two films in the Mamma Mia! franchise were huge hits. While the first one earned over $700 million, the second film grabbed almost $400 million globally, according to Box Office Mojo.

The films bring together an ensemble cast of Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, and Colin Firth, among others. While there is no proper update on when Mamma Mia 3 might come out, we expect the cast to return in the film.

The first film begins with Sophie Sheridan (Amanda Seyfried), who is about to get married to Sky Rymand (Dominic Cooper). However, she tries to make things exciting by inviting three guys who are former flames of her mother, Donna (Meryl Streep). Also, Sophie knows that one of these men is her father and she wants to find out the truth.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, the second film, is more about Donna's past when she dated the three men during different times. It moves between the present, when Donna is no more, and the past. Fans get to see how things turned out for Donna.

Although both the movies exploded at the box office, the first one received average ratings from the critics. The film sits with 55% approval on Rotten Tomatoes. Film critic Brian Eggert has praised Meryl Streep and written,

"The film’s greatest pleasures derive from the star factor. Namely, Meryl Streep. Is there anything this woman can’t do?"

The second one has a better score on the review aggregator platform, with 80% approval.

Mamma Mia 3 is still in the dark, but now that Meryl Streep's character might not be in it for long, we should expect the rest of the stars to give us a mesmerizing musical tale.
