Yet another WNBA game came to a grinding halt this week after a profane object was flung onto the court.
During the Golden State Valkyries and Chicago Sky's bout this Friday, August 1, an unidentified individual threw a s*x toy onto the court of the Wintrust Arena, which is in Chicago.
The incident took place about 7 minutes and 42 seconds into the third quarter, People Magazine has reported, and the live broadcast caught the moment it happened. In the video, the toy can be seen resting out of bounds under a basket before the referee blew the whistle and the announcer said,
“Got a whistle away from the basketball."
Another referee darted to the object and kicked it away from the court before a fellow staffer picked it up with a towel. The incident is the second to take place at a WNBA game in three days.
Here's everything we know about this week's incident at the WBNA match between the Golden State Valkyries and Chicago Sky:
As reported by The Guardian, Valkyries forward Cecilia Zandalasini said following her team's 77-75 victory:
“I mean, first of all, it was super dangerous. And then when we found out what it was, I guess we just started laughing. I’ve never seen anything like that. I’m just glad we worked through that situation. We stayed locked in, we stayed concentrated.”
Sky Center Elizabeth Williams said in the postgame press conference:
“It’s super disrespectful. I don’t really get the point of it. It’s really immature. Whoever is doing it needs to grow up.”
Isabelle Harrison, who plays forward for the New York Liberty, took to X to voice her disdain as well:
“ARENA SECURITY?! Hello??!” she wrote. “Please do better. It’s not funny. Never was funny. Throwing ANYTHING on the court is so dangerous.”
The first incident took place on Tuesday, when the Valkyries saw a 77-75 victory over the Atlanta Dream. At the time, the obscene object landed straight on the court during the final seconds of the WNBA game, People Magazine has reported.
“Something flies on the court actually from the crowd. And you can see the object... the green thing bounces and it goes to the sideline,” sports announcer Morgan Ragan said. “We’re not exactly sure where it came from,” she continued. After the timeout was called and the object identified, she said, “Oh my gosh, OK. OK, inappropriate. Get them out of here, whoever it is [that threw it].”
The WNBA game was held at College Park, Georgia. As of this writing, the WNBA has yet to issue an official statement addressing the matter. However, in the wake of this Sunday's incident, Chicago Sky player Angel Reese also took to X to jibe at Indiana Fever player Sydney Colson.
“Hey @SydJColson, why do you keep throwing your mean green in different arenas…. it’s getting weird.”
