In 1993, Sylvester Stallone's Cliffhanger became a global box office hit, grossing over $255 million worldwide and cementing its place as one of the decade’s most iconic action thrillers. Despite reports of there being a sequel to the classic, the project lay dormant and uncertain.

Now, three decades later, it has finally been confirmed that a sequel to Cliffhanger is on the way.

As reported by Deadline, the film is currently in post-production and stars Lily James and Pierce Brosnan in the lead roles. Directed by Jaume Collet Serra, the film is based on rock climber John Long's A Premise.

The untitled sequel will feature Brosnan as Ray Cooper, a veteran mountaineer, and Lily James as his daughter, Naomi. James has described the shoot as “exhilarating,” with the script originating from a story by Ana Lily Amirpour before Melanie Toast delivered the latest draft. The film also features Nell Tiger Free, Franz Rogowski, Shubham Saraf, Assaad Bouab, Suzy Bemba, and Bruno Gouery.

Sylvester Stallone, the lead of the first film, who once explored his own sequel and even signed onto a legacy continuation, is not involved. Still, the mountain saga he launched three decades ago is poised to scale fresh cinematic heights.

The Cliffhanger saga has seen quite a few twists in terms of development over the past three decades. The original film earned a staggering $255 million, and talks of a sequel followed immediately. One wild pitch from 1994 suggested a plot that would have involved Gabe Walker battling terrorists at the Hoover Dam.

Another had a plot about young climbers by Neal H. Moritz, with Ana Lily Amirpour's version of the story also surfacing. At one point, Jason Momoa was also circling the franchise, but every single time, the ropes snapped.

By 2023, more developments had come along. A legacy sequel starring Stallone, directed by Ric Roman Waugh, was announced. Soon enough, Jean-Francois Richet took over as fans were given hopes of Italian Alps backdrops, espionage elements, and a franchise future. However, with the shifting ideas in creativity, the project was shelved.

Finally, in October 2024, the mountain reset. Stallone and Waugh stepped away, and the project reinvented itself not as a sequel but as a full-scale reboot. Jaume Collet-Serra climbed aboard as director, with a script first sparked by Ana Lily Amirpour and finished by Melanie Toast. Lily James now leads as Naomi Cooper, with Pierce Brosnan playing her father, Ray, kidnapped in the Dolomites. The ensemble includes Nell Tiger Free, Franz Rogowski, Shubham Saraf, Assaad Bouab, Suzy Bemba, and Bruno Gouery.

Production kicked off on Halloween 2024 in Bavaria and Munich, signaling that after decades of dangling in development limbo, Cliffhanger is finally ready to scale new heights.
