Amazon MGM Studios has greenlit a sequel that's being called Red, White & Royal Wedding, with Nicholas Glitzine and Taylor Zakhar-Perez returning as Prince Henry and Alex Claremont-Diaz.
The sequel will unfold under the direction of five-time Emmy nominee Jamie Babbit, best known for But I’m a Cheerleader. The sequel’s script comes from Gemma Burgess, Matthew López, and the novel’s author, Casey McQuiston, ensuring the same charm and sharp wit that made the first film a global favorite. Berlanti Schechter Films’ Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter are returning to produce, alongside Michael McGrath, López, and Sullivan Street Productions’ Jennifer Salke, with McQuiston executive producing.
Speaking about the film, Babbit said in a statement,
“After directing But I’m a Cheerleader in my 20s, I’m thrilled to be back in the queer love universe of Red, White & Royal Wedding. We all need this kind of optimism, fantasy, and gay joy. I’m thrilled to work with this brilliant team.”
Red, White & Royal Blue received much praise from fans and was a success with critics and the audience praising the film's premise and the actors' performance. With the lead cast returning and fans eager to know the future of Henry and Alex, Red, White & Royal Wedding might just be the queer romance fans have been eagerly waiting for.
More details about Red, White & Royal Blue
Red, White & Royal Blue is a sparkling romantic comedy that reimagines diplomacy through the lens of love. Directed by Matthew López in his feature debut and co-written with Ted Malawer, the film adapts Casey McQuiston’s 2019 bestselling novel of the same name. It follows Alex Claremont-Diaz, the charismatic First Son of the United States, and Prince Henry, a stoic British royal, whose rivalry turns into a secret transatlantic romance.
The film starts with an unexpected cake incident, as the story makes its way to the two men pretending to be on good terms for the sake of their political relations. As one thing leads to another, they find themselves in a passionate romance, as they have to face their families and their identities, and the effect it will have on their families' politics.
The ensemble cast includes Uma Thurman as President Ellen Claremont, Stephen Fry as King James III, Clifton Collins Jr., Sarah Shahi, Rachel Hilson, and Ellie Bamber. Filmed across England between June and August 2022, the production came together under Amazon Studios with Greg Berlanti producing. López joined the project in 2021, and casting for the star-studded lineup began the following year.
Red, White & Royal Blue is available to stream on Prime Video.
