Danny DeVito, during a sit-down with Colin Farrell for Variety's Actors on Actors, published on June 2, revealed that he secretly "lusted" after his co-star Michelle Pfeiffer when the two filmed 1992's Batman Returns. Colin and Danny were exchanging their Batman stories when DeVito said,

"She was a goddess. If I knew she was going to be in a scene that day..."

To which Farrell quipped,

"Did you brush your teeth that morning?"

Danny responded,

"I got all flushed. Put extra makeup on - 'Give me another pound of makeup.' It was very difficult."

DeVito confessed that it was "just so wonderful" working with Pfeiffer, and added,

"And I lusted after her. I loved her."

When Farrell showed interest in DeVito's confession and asked,

"We're moving on from your lust. Just tell me what form did the lust take behaviorally?"

Danny joked that it was Penguin's reaction and not his.

"It was not me. It was the Penguin. It was Oswald that was lustful."

When Farrell asked if the Catwoman ever called "security" on Danny DeVito, he implied that the actress "liked it" and "liked Oswald."

"So I figured I'd put those two together" - Danny DeVito on changing the Batman storyline

In the original Batman Returns, Catwoman rejects Oswald's advances. However, since Danny DeVito secretly "lusted" after Michelle Pfeiffer's character, DeVito went on to write a short story in 2021, where he changed the original storyline and created a romantic dynamic between the two characters.

His story was featured in DC Comics' anthology comic, Gotham City Villains. In December 2021, DeVito also revealed that he wants to reprise his iconic role as The Penguin in a direct continuation of the 1992 Batman Returns. While speaking to Forbes at the time, he said,

"I feel like it's not out of the question that The Penguin will return someday, but this is all up to Tim, whether or not Tim wants to do this. I would say that could be in the cars because we ain't dead yet."

He then suggested they could "do a continuation of what he had in the past because that was truly a brilliant movie."

Echoing his earlier wishes, DeVito, in his recent conversation with Farrell, again expressed that he would "absolutely" reprise his role as Penguin, since it gave him a "freedom that burst out", where he could "go off the rails with something."
