In Game of Thrones' Season 5 wedding-night scene, Sansa Stark, played by Sophie Turner, was s*xually assaulted by Ramsay Bolton. The episode was titled Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken. It drew significant backlash when it aired in 2015. Sophie Turner portrayed Sansa from the age of 14 until the show's finale. She has since reflected on that scene and defended it.

In a recent interview with Flaunt magazine, Sophie Turner explained that despite the scene being difficult, it carried weight:

"I did feel, and still do, that Game of Thrones shone a light on things that many people were like, 'Oh god, you can't show that kind of thing.' I understand it can be triggering, I totally understand that point of view. But I did feel we were actually doing a lot of justice to women and the fight women have had to fight for hundreds of thousands of years, the patriarchy, being treated as objects, and being constantly s*xually assaulted. I do not think there is one woman I know who has not had a form of that."

Sophie Turner's comments were quick to gain attention from netizens. One fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter):

"She got under my skin in that role. But the glow up is real"

Internet reacts as Sophie Turner reflects on one of GOT's controversial scenes

Pop Base took to its official X (formerly Twitter) page to share that,

"Sophie Turner reflects on Sansa Stark's s*xual assault scene in 'Game of Thrones'"

Fans soon weighed in on the comment section of the X post as they expressed their thoughts. Below are what some of them had to remark:

"as a girl i am happy that she did this scene and made people argue about it", stated a fan.
"It's a horrible scene but its meant to be. Stuff like that happens in life. Life cant always be gift wrapped with a trigger warning. GOT is a graphic show anyway", noted another.
"Sophie Turner's words carry so much weight, acknowledging the pain while also recognizing the importance of sparking conversations that matter. A brave and honest perspective.", lauded a third.

Others also chimed in:

"Wow, her words are so real and inspiring. I really admire her courage for talking about such a heavy and important topic! While others go for lighter stuff, her choice deserves respect", penned a netizen.
"Sophie Turner's take on the Sansa scene: Proud to have shown the "atrocities that happened to women" and contribute to a conversation on the patriarchy and s*xual assault. A tough scene, but she stands by its brutal honesty.", opined another.
"Sophie is smart and intelligent. Joe jonas didn't deserve her", commented a third.

The Game of Thrones episode in question showed Ramsay Bolton assaulting Sansa and forcing Theon Greyjoy to watch it. Iwan Rheon played Ramsay. He later called filming the assault "the worst day of my career."
