Ryan Coogler's Sinners is reaching new heights less than a week after its release, as the film has squashed predictions of its opening weekend earnings and has become the first film of this decade to get such a big opening with an original story. Apart from its financial earnings, the film has seen good reviews across multiple sites, making it one of the most successful films released this year.

It is currently the #1 film on box office charts and has an earning of $48 million domestically and $63 million globally. Early predictions stated that the film will garner close to $45 million; the film has already passed that mark. It's a rare occurrence for a horror film to reach heights like these, but Ryan Coogler's cinematic masterpiece, combined with Michael B. Jordan's captivating performance, made it possible.

The movie cost the company $90 million to make, with an additional $50–60 million for international marketing. According to sources, Sinners must make between $200 million and $225 million worldwide to break even theatrically because theater owners keep half of ticket sales.

Even though Sinners got off to a minimal start overseas, with $15.4 million from 71 territories last weekend, the film's intense buzz online and all the positive reviews will surely push more moviegoers to the theaters.

What is Sinners about?

Marketed as a gothic vampirical thriller, Sinners is about a quaint town of Chocago where two twin brothers get together to build a juke club where the black town folk can come together and make merry. Played by Michael B. Jordan, the twins, Stack and Smoke, get to building this space and are joined by Stack's girlfriend Mary, played by Hailee Steinfeld. They bring in their cousin Sammie, played by newcomer Miles Caton, who is a musical prodigy.

His music attracts the evil of a vampire coven nearby, led by a White vampire Remmick, who create havoc in the village as they try and get the villagers to join them. Although they fail, Remmick's main intentions are to get hold of Sammie and to make him join the coven.

The film is a brilliant story of strength, brotherhood, the feeling of community and culture. It has an underlying theme of music and is overall so much more than just a horror story. According to Jordan, Coogler himself agrees that the movie is so much more than its eerie premise, as the actor told VIBE about the film and said,

“Yeah, this movie is about love. The love of music, the love of blues, the love of your culture, the love of family, the love for your freedom. There’s so many characters that have a love for something in this movie, and it’s all intertwined, and they all end up together, you know what I’m saying, in one place. And love is the thing that gets them through.”

Sinners is now in theaters.
