Smurfs sets streaming release date: Here’s how and when to watch the Rihanna starrer musical

The Smurfs is a live-action film in the musical fantasy comedy genre. Directed by Chris Miller, the movie is an adaptation of the namesake comic book series and serves as a reboot of the franchise. On June 28, 2025, the film had its world premiere in Brussels and was theatrically released on July 18 by Paramount Pictures. Here's the official synopsis as per Letterboxd:

When Papa Smurf is mysteriously taken by evil wizards, Razamel and Gargamel, Smurfette leads the Smurfs on a mission into the real world to save him. With the help of new friends, the Smurfs must discover what defines their destiny to save the universe.

The Smurfs is finally releasing on Paramount+ on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. The live-action reboot will be available in North America. It is written by Pam Brady, while Rihanna, Ryan Harris, Jay Brown, and Ty Ty Smith are producers. Andrew Lary, Anthony Tittanegro, and Pete Chiappetta are the executives producers.

Besides being the co-producer, Rihanna has also voiced the lead character of Smurfette. Here's a list of its cast members:

Upon its release, the film received negative critical feedback but ultimately grossed $117.4 million. In a Variety interview, Chris Miller shared that he wanted the backstory of the main character to be explored in the film. He said,

“It was really important to approach the story like this was the first Smurfs movie that’s been made — something that would stand on its own.”

He added,

“I’m a sucker for a good backstory.”

The film franchise dates back to 1965 with Les Aventures des Schtroumpfs, a collection of several short films. It was revived by Sony Pictures Animation with three films released in 2011, 2013, and 2017. The 2025 title serves as a reboot of this franchise and tells the backstory of the protagonist, the only female Smurf.
