The final day of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival was struck by a massive power outage.

The outage hit Cannes and its surrounding region in southeastern France. As a result, it disrupted early screenings, traffic systems, and coffee shops, among others. According to reports, there was a suspected act of sabotage related to this incident. French authorities are now investigating it as a deliberate attack on local electrical infrastructure.

More than 160,000 homes in the Alpes-Maritimes area lost power. The Palais des Festivals, which is the main venue of the festival, switched to an independent power supply. It allowed the evening's closing ceremony to go ahead.

Internet reactions to 2025 Cannes facing a power outage

Pop Base took to its official X (formerly Twitter) to share:

"Cannes is currently experiencing a power outage amid film festival celebrations."

Netizens were quick to gather in the comment section of the post as they shared their opinions on the matter. Below are some of the reactions:

"Cannes, Coachella everything turning out to be a mismanaged events...!! So much money wasted in all these overhyped stuff..", declared an X user.
"Looks like even the red carpet can't outshine a blackout—hope someone grabbed a flashlight so the real stars can still steal the show!", joked another.
"Hope the film festival doesn’t get Canned", joked a third.

Others also chimed in:

"Not even the electricity could handle the ego in that room", penned a netizen.
"This happens when you invite more people than you can accomodate. So many influencers there this year. Can cannes go back to be about movie fraternities & movie premieres !?", opined another.
"In 1971 Richard Nixon ended the gold standard on our currency and prices have been rising almost straight up ever since. But no one acknowledges the connection. It must be a coincidence. In the last decade the climate change alarmists have been pushing clean energy, shutting down power plants etc ... Power outages all over the place and watch the media studiously avoid connecting the diminished power grid to the climate change alarmism. Again, coincidence?", commented a third.

It is worth noting that the blackout was not due to a natural malfunction. French police confirmed on Saturday that they were investigating possible arson. Authorities revealed that the incident started overnight with a fire at an electrical substation in the village of Tanneron.

Later that morning, around 10:00 a.m. local time, a second disruption occurred when the legs of a high-voltage transmission pylon near Villeneuve-Loubet were found to have been cut.
