During a May 23 episode of Pardon My Take, Dwyane Wade explains how the iconic NBA banana boat photo, which was taken during a 2015 vacation to the Bahamas, came to be.
Wade revealed that his wife, Gabrielle Union, wanted to take the banana boat out, and none of his friends, including LeBron James and Chris Paul, predicted cameras to be around them or that they would get photographed. He said,
"My wife wanted to go on a banana boat. So, Chris Paul, Bron and I all got on a banana boat. Now, we were in the middle of nowhere, no one was supposed to know this but us. Someone took a photo from God knows where. No one was supposed to have seen us on a banana boat!"
In 2015, Dwyane Wade was on a vacation with a few of his NBA pals and wife Gabrielle Union when a photo of them riding a banana boat alongside a yacht in the Bahamas was snapped and went viral. Wade went on to add that if they knew someone was taking a picture, they would have looked "a little cooler."
Dwyane mentioned that Carmelo Anthony had also joined the trip later and would have been on the boat too had he come earlier. The three of them, including LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, and Chris Paul, were popularly known as the banana boat team after the image went viral.
Dwyane Wade's wife Gabrielle Union opens up about the banana boat photo
His recent intake on the Pardon My Take podcast wasn't' the first time Dwyane Wade had opened up about the banana boat photo. His wife, Gabrielle Union, who was also in the picture, in a November 2017 interview with Hot Ones, took credit for the image since it was her idea to get on the banana boat.
"I will take credit for the banana boat fiasco. The first year that we started going on the couples' trip, LeBron and (his wife) Savannah, they chose the boat and they chose the location and that boat had all kinds of bells and whistles. There was like a three-story slide into the ocean. They had jet-skis. And then they had other inflatable toys that could be pulled behind this smaller boat...So I saw banana boat and I wanted to ride it."
However, Gabrielle mentioned that "none of the girls" wanted to go, so she tried to convince Bron, Dwyane, and Chris to get on the boat. Despite the players' suspicions that they were being watched, she attempted to reassure them by claiming that no one was looking and that no one would be interested in their actions. Gabrielle asked them to get "over" themselves and join her for the ride.
However, Union mentioned that the mystery person did not get the chance to capture the "best part" when the group flew off the boat and landed "face-first." She also said that the banana boat crew was upset that the images had leaked for the rest of their vacation.
