English filmmaker Ridley Scott shared his thoughts about the present-day movies. According to a blog posted on World of Reel, the filmmaker attended the BFI retrospective recently, where he was asked which recent films caught his attention. He replied:
“The quantity of movies that are made today, literally millions globally, and most of it is sh*t. So what I do, and it’s a horrible thing, but I’ve started to watch my own movies, and actually they’re really good! And also, they don’t age.”
Meanwhile, social media users reacted to his statement, with one X user bringing up American filmmaker Martin Scorsese. A user wrote:
“Somewhere Scorsese just nodded in quiet respect.”
Others praised him and mentioned his films, like Blade Runner. One of them commented:
“Ah, the eternal flex from a legend who's forgotten his own Prometheus-level plot holes. But Blade Runner? Immortal. Keep directing, Ridley—just maybe collaborate with Nolan next time.”
A netizen agreed with Ridley Scott’s comment, saying:
“He isn’t wrong. Most new movies look like they were written by an algorithm having a midlife crisis.”
Meanwhile, another X user shared their experience of watching Prometheus, mentioning:
“I have yet to make it through “Prometheus” without falling asleep. I went to see it in the theater the first time. Do you know how embarassing it is to have a theater cleaning crew wake you up and tell you to go home?”
An online commentator joked about Ridley Scott’s comment, writing:
“Ridley’s film nights must be wild: “Tonight’s movie? Me again. Tomorrow? Still me.””
Ridley Scott discusses his works
According to Yahoo Entertainment, speaking at the event, the filmmaker said that when he recently watched Black Hawk Down, he couldn’t believe how he had managed to make it. Scott added that it felt nice to see a good movie being made once in a while, as it gave him a sense of relief.
Sharing his thoughts about the present-day movies, Ridley Scott said:
“80-60%, 40% is the rest, and 25% of that 40 is not bad, and 10% is pretty good, and the top 5% is great. I’m not sure about the portion of what I’ve just said, but in the 1940s, when there were perhaps 300 movies made, 70% of them were similar, for example.”
The filmmaker also opined that many films that are made today are shown to be expensive due to the special effects. Discussing his work, Ridley Scott said that Blade Runner was the first movie he made in Hollywood, and at that time, he felt out of place because he was from England.
Scott explained that even though he had already made The Duelist and Alien, it didn’t seem to carry much weight there. He was used to being in charge after running his own advertising company for many years, so having less control on set frustrated him. He admitted that making the film was tough, but he still thought it turned out great.
Ridley Scott also believed the movie didn’t do well at first because it was so unique and showed a kind of world people hadn’t seen before, especially one that mixed science fiction with social ideas.
