Sonic spin-off: Paramount announces release date for a new film based on the video game franchise

Sonic the Hedgehog is getting another installment. Paramount Pictures has announced the spin-off film and has revealed that it will drop in the theatres in 2028. The franchise is an adaptation of the namesake video games. So far, there have been three entries in the franchise that came out in 2020, 2022 and 2024.

Besides the film, the franchise has also churned out three short films titled Around the World in 80 Seconds, Sonic Drone Home and A Very Sonic Christmas. There's also a television series called Knuckles within the same universe.

Paramount announces another Sonic film

As per Variety, Paramount Pictures recently announced a yet-to-be-titled "Sonic Universe Event Film." They will be releasing it theatrically on December 22, 2028. Neal H. Mortiz, who has produced other installments, will also be backing this project. The studio has kept other details under wraps for the film.

It will be a different film from the forthcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which will drop in the theatres on March 19, 2027. Over the years, this film franchise has emerged as a big financial success for the studio. The first three installments have collectively grossed more than $1 billion globally.

The previous entry (Sonic the Hedgehog 3) in the franchise was released on December 20, 2024. Directed by Jeff Fowler, it was written by Josh Miller, Pat Casey and John Whittington. The film starred Jim Carrey, Idris Elba (voice acting), James Marsden, Adam Pally and Tom Butler, among others.

The film grossed $492.2 million, becoming the most profitable entry in the franchise. While the fourth film will be a direct sequel, the 2028 release will most likely be a spin-off. Fans will have to wait for more details to emerge regarding its plot, cast members and director.

The original namesake video game series was the creation of Sega by Yuji Naka, Hirokazu Yasuhara and Naoto Ohshima. The first video game was released in 1991 and turned out to be a success. Its popularity is attributed to Sega becoming a profitable company in the 1990s. Since then, there have been several installments and spin-off video games.

In recent times, Hollywood has tasted success in video game adaptations like A Minecraft Movie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, among others. The news of yet another spin-off is expected to excite all the fans of this franchise.
