Practical Magic 2 is a direct sequel to the 1998 romantic fantasy flick Practical Magic, which starred Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman in the lead roles. The sequel is slated to be released on September 18, 2026, with Bullock and Kidman reprising their roles as Sally Owens and Gilly Owens, respectively.
Evan Rachel Wood had played the role of Kylie Owens, the elder daughter of Sally. However, the actress is not returning for the sequel. In a recent Instagram story, Woods revealed the reason behind it and apologized to all the fans for that.
"I am sorry to disappoint the fans."
Evan Rachel Wood will not feature in Practical Magic 2
Evan Rachel Wood recently took to her Instagram stories to reveal that she will not be returning in Practical Magic 2. She wrote:
“I am getting asked about this a lot, so l’ll just clear it up now; I was not asked to come back and be in the Practical Magic sequel. I offered my services, even if it was one scene or one line. I was told they are recasting. I am sorry to disappoint the fans. It was not in my control or my choice. I would have happily rejoined my sisters.”
Wood put out this message after it was announced that Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest are also returning for the sequel. Several other actors have also joined the cast, including Joey King, Maisie Williams, Lee Pace, Solly McLeod, and Xolo Maridueña. Susanne Bier, who has earlier helmed Bird Box and The Perfect Couple, is directing the sequel. The script is written by Bier, Georgia Pritchett and Akiva Goldsman.
The first film was directed by Griffin Dune and focuses on the Sally sisters, who are raised by their aunts following the demise of their parents. Sally and Gillian grow up and have learnt magic, which they use to stop the spirit of Gillian's abusive and manipulative boyfriend. The film was released on October 16, 1998 grossing $68.3 million, failing to recover its budget of $75 million. It also met with a mostly mixed critical response.
Despite it being a critical and commercial success, the film has managed to gain a cult following over the years for its themes and performances. The sequel is being produced by Denise Di Novi, who also backed the original one. We can expect more details regarding the plot to unravel in the coming months.
