Wicked: For Good is less than a week away, and Jon M. Chu is opening up about how the sequel will lift off the curtains of a fairytale from the premise, and launch the audience straight into a world that's much more real and dark. The film is all set to bring back Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as Glinda and Elphaba, exploring the events after the first film as Elphaba continues to fight for the animals of Oz.

As reported by ScreenRant, Chu talked about the key differences between both the films and how they differ in terms of realism as Wicked: For Good shows reality after the sparkly events of the first film. The director said,

"Wicked part one sort of plays as a structure for us to break in movie two. Movie one was about this fairytale, was about the things that we’re taught by watching movies, or reading books, or what our parents taught us when we’re young. And these hopes and these dreams, and then the reality of it not being what we thought. And then having the courage to step out and being who you are. That’s a great thing you have on a calendar, what you tweet out, or what you have on a t-shirt, or... but that’s not reality. Movie two is reality. Movie two is what happens after."

Wicked: For Good is already seeing anticipation from fans, who have waited a whole year to find out the events after the first film and what fate awaits Elphaba and Glinda. The film is all set to release in theaters on November 21, 2025.

Jon M. Chu returns to Oz in Wicked: For Good, the 2025 musical fantasy sequel that picks up right where the 2024 film left off. This chapter draws from the second act of the 2003 stage musical created by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, which itself grew out of Gregory Maguire’s 1995 reinterpretation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the iconic 1939 film. Once again, Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum step back into their roles, anchoring a story that moves between the shimmering public face of Oz and the shadows where truth hides.

The film travels through the Land of Oz before and during the familiar events of Baum’s classic narrative. At its heart is the complicated bond between Elphaba and Glinda as they grow into the figures the world will label the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. The film shows what pushes them apart, what keeps them tethered, and how Dorothy Gale’s unexpected landing from Kansas sends ripples through everything they have built and broken.

The film held its first premiere in São Paulo, Brazil on November 4, 2025. Audiences in Singapore will see it on November 20, and Universal will release it in the United States on November 21.
