Steve Martin celebrated his 80th birthday yesterday, on August 14.
As birthday wishes for the actor and comedian took over social media, his 1978 song King Tut surfaced online. The song was reportedly first performed in a segment on SNL. Meanwhile, X user Vince Langman shared a clip of the song, writing:
“In honor of Steve Martin's 80th birthday, here's his classic "King Tut" song. Now I'm going to have this song in my head all night!”
The King Tut video featured Martin in an Egyptian outfit. In the monologue of the SNL performance, he said that in the song, he attempted to implement the ancient melodies and modalities. He also mentioned:
“One of the great art exhibits ever to tour the United States was the 'Treasures of Tutankhamun,' or 'King Tut.' But I think it's a national disgrace the way we have commercialized it with trinkets and toys, t-shirts and posters.”
On the occasion of Martin's birthday, X user Danny Deraney wished the actor, writing:
"The time Steve Martin and Gregory Hines showed off their tap dancing skills in 1981. Happy 80th Steve!"
Warner Bros. UK shared a birthday message, with the words:
"Steve Martin as a dentist is giving us nightmares #LittleShopOfHorrors actor!"
In June 2025, Martin was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where Kimmel mentioned that he found it difficult to believe that Martin had turned 80. Martin said turning 80 felt fine, but 77 had been a tricky year because, being a little dyslexic, he kept mixing up the numbers.
When asked about getting older, he said he felt comfortable with it, believed in being honest with himself, and chose to accept the changes that came with age. He even mentioned that when his hair eventually turned gray, he decided to embrace it.
Steve Martin on holding on to his charisma by checking his vocabulary
Jimmy Kimmel also asked Steve Martin if he had any goals he wanted to achieve. Steve said he had a personal motto and shared a funny story about a writer who joked that people should trust the mirror they like at home, but might be shocked if they see their reflection unexpectedly somewhere else.
Steve then said he had an unusual plan. He wanted to take Ozempic while eating McDonald’s three times a day for six months, to see which one would have a bigger effect. When Kimmel asked if Martin ever thought he would lose his charisma, the actor said:
“You have to think about it. And here’s how I measure myself by checking my vocabulary and I see what words I'm using for example, the other day I used the word wafer and I thought I have not used the word wafer in 30 years or more and yet it was there in my brain for me to access and I was impressed.”
Speaking about his show, Only Murders in the Building, Steve Martin joked that if the series went on for a few more years, he and Martin Short might end up as the victims, with “time” being the killer. He also mentioned that a magazine humorously wrote that the only way he wouldn’t win an Emmy that year was if the voters watched the show.
Discussing his song, 5 Days Out, 2 Days Back, Steve Martin said he wrote the lyrics while musician Alison Brown composed the music. He revealed that they had composed more than ten songs together.
