More than a month later, the death of The Stone Roses and Primal Scream's Gary "Mani" Mounfield has been revealed. On November 20, the legendary Manchester musician passed away quietly at the age of 63, at his home in Heaton Moor, Stockport. His cause of death was announced by his brother. Mani's funeral will take place on 22 December 2025.

According to reports and confirmations from his family obtained from the Manchester Evening News, the legendary bassist died while sleeping because of his respiratory problems associated with his long battle with emphysema. He reportedly had a seizure, and when ambulance paramedics were called, they tried all they could but were not successful, and he was declared dead.

The authorities confirmed a non-suspicious death, requiring neither the presence of the police nor any referral to the coroner. Mani's family later disclosed that he died quietly, bringing much-needed clarity to the weeks of uncertainty that followed the initial news of his death.

The cause of death comes a few days before Mani's funeral, which will be taking place on December 22, in the city of Manchester. A service will be held at Manchester Cathedral in the late morning, which will be followed by a private committal and an invitation-only wake for close family and friends.

It was Mani's brother, Greg Mounfield, who was the first to publicly disclose his brother's passing. He announced on social media:

"It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother. Gary Mani Mounfield RIP. Reunited with his beautiful wife Imelda."

Mani’s passing comes close to two years since the death of his wife, Imelda, in November 2023, aged 50 years, after fighting stage four bowel cancer. The two were married for 25 years and were noted to have a very strong relationship both on their personal side and when carrying out their charitable work.

They are survived by their twin sons, Gene and George, who were born in January 2013 and are 12 years old as of now. In the years immediately following Imelda’s diagnosis, they organized charity events to raise money for several charities, including The Christie Hospital, Maggie’s, and The Stockport Charitable Trust, with money raised from auctions of items donated by celebrities like David Beckham and the band Oasis.

Tributes from bandmates and the music world

Even the Stone Roses took to social media to announce his death by posting a throwback photo of the bassist:

"RIP our wonderful brother Mani. The greatest bass player and friend we could ever have wished for. X"

Lead singer of the Stone Roses, Ian Brown, also took to social media to pay tribute to his band member:

"Rest In Peace Mani."

He was even described as a 'magnificent musician and Mancunian' by the Mayor of Manchester.

Band members, other artists, and fans all shared their tributes for The Stone Roses and Primal Scream bassist. Even Manchester United, the football team that he loved and adored, paid tribute to him.
