Super Troopers 3 is officially in production

Variety has reported that the production of Super Troopers 3 has officially begun. The comedy group Broken Lizard (including Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske) will be returning for the third installment. Brian Cox, who had played Captain John O’Hagen in the earlier installments, will also be returning in the threequel. Besides him, Marisa Coughlan is also reprising her role as Ursula Hanson.

Other cast members that will feature in the film are Andrew Dismukes, Chace Crawford, and Nat Faxon.

The script has already been written by Broken Lizard, with Chandrasekhar set to once again handle directing duties. Principal photography is scheduled to begin later this week. In an official statement, Jay Chandrasekhar said:

“Broken Lizard is excited to help bring the theatrical comedy back. To America, we say, ‘It’s mustache-growing time!’”

The shooting is expected to commence this week. The franchise started in the year 2001, and it was produced by Richard Perello. It focused on five troopers from the Vermont State Department. They are trying to expose a drug ring to save their jobs. The film had its world premiere at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. Upon its theatrical release, the film grossed $23.2 million at the box office, against a budget of $1.5 to $3 million.

A sequel, Super Troopers 2, was once again helmed by Chandrasekhar. Despite the success of the first film, the makers failed to find a financier for the sequel. They started a crowdfunding program and ended up collecting $4.7 million. It focused on the troopers trying to fix a border dispute between Canada and the US. The film was also a commercial success.
