Superman grosses $56.5 million on its opening day
Variety has reported that the superhero film has grossed around $56.5 million at the box office on its opening day. This includes the money it made in the preview screenings. The figure makes it the second biggest opening of 2025 behind A Minecraft Movie, which grossed $57.11 million. The film is also provided with an early access screening for Amazon Prime members.
The figure is less than the projected number, which was touted to be around $100 million. Certain experts also estimated the number to be around $140 million. It is made on a budget of $225 million and will kickstart James Gunn's newly created DCU. The film will have to hold beyond the weekend buzz to recover the budget and thrive.
The film's cast members include,
- David Corenswet as Clark Kent aka Superman
- Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane
- Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor
- Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt aka Mister Terrific
- Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason aka Metamorpho
- Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, aka Green Lantern
- Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders aka Hawkgirl
- Skyler Gisondo plays Olsen
In an EW interview, James Gunn revealed how he zeroed in on Man of Steel to be DCU's first film. He said,
"All three things that are now coming out were already in process before I took over at DC. I was already hired to write Superman, I was already working on Creature Commandos, and I already had a deal to do Peacemaker Season 2."
"The thing is that the priorities of what was up first changed. Because I was already writing Superman...he's one of the three biggest characters at DC, one of the most important characters in all of Warner Bros.' catalog, but was also really the figurehead of DC in a lot of ways because he's the first ever superhero."
The film is currently playing in the theatres.
