Ryan Coogler's recent directorial venture, Sinners, turned out to be a critical and commercial success, having minted $350 million. Coogler has written the film and has also produced it with Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian. The film stars Michael B. Jordan, Coogler's long-time collaborator, in dual roles of twin brothers who return to their hometown in 1932 Mississippi, where they encounter vampires.

Recently, the director spoke about why he does not want to make a sequel. He said that he wanted the film to feel like a full meal and "that was always my intention." Let us find out in detail what he said.

Ryan Coogler spoke to Ebony Magazine before the release of his film Sinners. Since the success of the film, his conversation has resurfaced, where he reveals why he might not make a sequel. He said,

“I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that. I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique.”

He further shared his intention to make a film that is a full meal.

“[I wanted the film] to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees and desserts, I wanted all of it there. I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing. That was how I was asked all about it. That was always my intention.”

In April, both Coogler and Michael B. Jordan gave an interview where they were asked about the sequel plans. In response, Jordan said that he is willing to return but said that it's Coogler who calls the shots.

"I mean, you know, I'm always… I'd be up for it. Not saying he wouldn't, but he calls the shots!"

Coogler answered and said,

"I call the shots? Zinzi?! I mean, no, for me, my favorite movies are ones where it feels like a world was happening before, and a world is gonna happen after."

All these statements of Coogler hint that the director might actually not go for a sequel, as he has made two in the past (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and, as a producer, Creed 2).

Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Miles Caton, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo, among others.
