What happened between Drake and Kendrick Lamar?
While Kendrick Lamar had taken shots at Drake in the early 2010s, the artists' feud kicked off just in recent years with lyrical diss tracks.
In April 2024, Drake released Push Ups, a diss, on streaming services. Drake also took aim at Rick Ross, The Weeknd, Metro Boomin, Future and other artists in the track. In the same month, he released a second track, titled Taylor Made Freestyle, on Instagram.
Kendrick Lamar responded by releasing his comeback track, Euphoria, in which he can be seen using the N-word, questioning Drake's style, his hip-hop merits, and more. He dropped a second diss track on May 3, titled, 6:16, in L.A., with Drake releasing a third diss track, titled Family Matters, in the same month. In the third track, Drake took digs at his relationship with Whitney Alford. Subsequently, Kendrick replied with a third diss, Meet the Grahams, and a fourth diss track, Not Like Us.
Not Like Us topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and in July, the artist dropped the video for the track featuring Drake in the form of an owl pinata and an owl locked in a cage.
The two have also been embroiled in a lawsuit after Drake filed a federal defamation suit against Universal Music Group, stemming from Lamar's diss track, Not Like Us. The artist mentioned that the track falsely portrays him as a "certified pedophile" and accused UMG of promoting it widely. The label responded by calling the lawsuit "utterly without merit" and asked the court to dismiss it, noting that rap battles cannot be considered defamation.
A trial date for the lawsuit hasn't been announced yet.
