The Family Stone sequel: Thomas Bezucha confirms development of the comedy drama’s second chapter

The Family Stone is a film in the comedy-drama genre, and it was released on December 16, 2005. The film was written and directed by Thomas Bezucha, while Michael London is the producer. Here's the official synopsis as per Letterboxd:

"An uptight, conservative businesswoman accompanies her boyfriend to his eccentric and outgoing family’s annual Christmas celebration and finds that she’s a fish out of water in their free-spirited way of life."

Recently, Bezucha has confirmed that they are working on its sequel. This news comes just weeks after the passing of the film's lead actress Diane Keaton. Let's find out the details.

The Family Stone sequel is officially happening

Thomas Bezucha, who wrote and directed The Family Stone, recently spoke to CNN. During the conversation, he spoke about the passing of Diane Keaton, who had played the role of Sybil Stone in the film.

“I’ve been haunted by the loss of Sybil for months now while I worked on it, and so this was a blow on a tender bruise already. Mentally, I’ve been spending time in that house where I’ve been missing her for a while already.”

The character of Sybil had died at the end of the first film. Bezucha then said:

"[I want to] honor [Keaton] even more [and] do a good job by the rest of the cast.”

He further said that he only wants the original cast to return for the sequel.

“I’m not interested in the Brady family reunion without the original Jan."

In the same interview, the director said that Disney has not officially greenlit the project yet. Keaton passed away on October 11, 2025, at the age of 79. The death certificate attributes bacterial pneumonia as the cause of her demise.

Meanwhile, The Family Stone focuses on the Stone family during Christmas when the eldest son brings home his girlfriend to propose to her. As she panics, she decides to bring in her sister for the adventure. However, the Stone family patriarch does not approve of his girlfriend. The film was released by 20th Century Fox on December 16, 2005.

Upon its release, the film received mixed critical feedback and grossed $92.9 million. It received a Golden Globe and Satellite Award nomination. Other cast members of the film include Craig T. Nelson, Dermont Mulroney, Luke Wilson, Elizabeth Reaser, Tyrone Giordano and Rachel McAdams.
