Netflix has dropped the first teaser for The Rip, the latest action thriller starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The duo star as Miami cops who stumble upon millions in a derelict stash house and as distrust goes around, it gets difficult who to trust.

Directed by Joe Carnahan, the film is inspired by 1970s cop classics and contemporary crime touchstones as the teaser leans into shadowy interiors, flashlight beams and close ups that suggest that the real currency at stake is trust and not cash. Apart from Damon and Affleck, the film also stars Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Sasha Calle and Kyle Chandler. Both Damon and Aflleck are producing through their Artists Equity banner,

If the teaser is any guide, The Rip promises a sweaty, ensemble minded thriller about trust, money and what a team will sacrifice when the score is too big to keep a secret. Netflix has slated the film to stream January 16, 2026, so buckle up.

Inspiration for The Rip came to Carnahan in multiple ways. It's both inspired by true events, as the teaser suggests, and also from 70s cop thrillers like Serpico and Prince of The City. In an interview with Tudum, the director says,

“‘The Rip’ came out of a deeply personal experience that my friend went through, both as a father and as head of tactical narcotics for the Miami-Dade police department,” Carnahan said. “It’s inspired in part by his life and then, by my enduring love for those classic ‘70’s cop thrillers that really valued the character and interpersonal relationships and became touchstones of that era — films like ‘Serpico’ and ‘Prince of The City’ and more recently, Michael Mann’s ‘Heat.'”

The film sees Matt Damon take the lead as Lieutenant Dane Dumars, while Ben Affleck plays Detective Sergeant JD Byrne. It's clear from the teaser that their relationship will be the central narrative of the film and how they navigate the circumstances they have found themselves in.

Talking about casting both the actors, director Joe Carnahan told Tudum about how they have both been world famous for more than thirty years with a "wonderful sense of friendship and brotherhood". Affleck and Damon are known for working together, having won an Academy Award for their work on the screenplay of Good Will Hunting, which they both starred in. Their last collaboration on screen was Air, the biographical sports drama depicting the journey of Air Jordans.

The Rip is a little deviated from the tone of their usual collaborations, but seeing Affleck's work on The Accountant franchise and Damon's stint in and as Jason Bourne and the Ocean's franchise, the genre of action isn't new to them.

The Rip will be available to stream on Netflix from January 16, 2026.
