After years of development limbo, sudden silence, and a director swap that left fans side-eyeing the whole thing, Sony and Legendary’s Street Fighter reboot has finally sucker-punched its way back into the spotlight, and it brought a new Chun-Li with it. Rising star Callina Liang has officially stepped into the thigh-high boots of the iconic Interpol agent, promising a version of Chun-Li that’s not just a fighter, but a full-force reckoning.

Liang’s casting kicks off a fiery new chapter for the film, reigniting a project that had been idling ever since the Talk to Me directors, Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou, ghosted earlier this year. But as names like Andrew Koji, Jason Momoa, Roman Reigns, and Noah Centineo join the film, the reboot is bulking up to be an anticipated watch. Even as it's taking shape, Street Fighter is strapping in, powering up, and aiming straight for a cinematic hit.

If Liang's name sounds familiar to you, then you've probably seen her on screen before. Her first big role came in 2022 as Mei in ITVX’s Tell Me Everything, where her mix of vulnerability and grit gave the teen drama unexpected emotional weight. But 2024 was the year Callina Liang had her big break. First up was Steven Soderbergh’s spine-tingling Presence, where she played Chloe, a character viewed only through the eyes of a ghost, and her performance was phenomenal. Then came Bad Genius, the slick, nerve-wracking remake where Liang became Lynn, a mastermind student-turned-cheat-code queen, outwitting systems and expectations alike. Now with Street Fighter and a solid role, it's certain that the actress will surely reach bigger heights.

Legendary and Capcom first joined forces in April 2023, and after a few production speed bumps, which included the Talk to Me directors Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou tagging out in 2024, the baton for Street Fighter is now firmly in the hands of Kitao Sakurai. The Philippou brothers backed up to focus on their film Bring Her Back, which opened to worldwide success.

But Street Fighter is in good hands, no doubt. The Eric Andre Show and Bad Trip alum brings chaotic energy and offbeat flair, which might be exactly what this punchy franchise needs. Filming kicks off in Atlanta in fall 2025, with Sony distributing and a 2026 release still on the cards.

As for the cast? It’s shaping up like a fan fiction fever dream. Andrew Koji and Noah Centineo are in talks to play Ryu and Ken, the classic Hadouken bros, while Jason Momoa might go green as Blanka, and Roman Reigns is lined up to bring the rage as Akuma. The plot is still under wraps as filming has not started yet, but the stacked roster and a talented director on board point towards great optimism. All we have to do now is watch and wait.

More details on the Street Fighter film are awaited for now.
