The Muppets director James Bobin in talks to direct Dragons Lair for Netflix

Dragons Lair is a video game that first saw its release on June 19, 1983, and received attention for its visual quality that was similar to films. Over the years, the game has been adapted into comic books and television series. There is some good news for the fans of this game as James Bobin is currently in talks to helm its adaptation for Netflix.

The British filmmaker had earlier directed Muppets Most Wanted and The Muppets for Disney as well as Dora and the Lost City of Gold. Let us look into the details of this latest update surrounding the video game.


James Bobin in talks to direct Dragons Lair adaptation

The Hollywood Reporter has stated that James Bobin is in the talking stage to adapt the 1980s video game Dragons Lair. Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds is also in talks to star in this adaptation. He is also reportedly interested in coming on board as a producer. Besides him, the producers also include Roy Lee, Trevor Engelson, Gary Goldman, Don Bluth, and Jon Pomeroy under the banners of Underground and Vertigo Entertainment. The project first came together back in 2020.

Bobin has his share of experience with adaption existing material. If things work out, he will be taking the directorial responsibility of the project. We can expect further details to emerge once things are finalized.

Over the years, film and television adaptations of video games have sped up. HBO's The Last of Us adapted the namesake 2013 Naughty Dog video game. The first and second seasons were well received, and the show will return with a third season. Recently, Jack Black starrer fantasy comedy film A Minecraft Movie was adapted from the 2011 video game Minecraft. The film ended up grossing $953.5 million, becoming the second highest-grossing video game adaptation. It's only behind 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

This wasn't always the case. Earlier, video game adaptations were poorly received by critics and audiences. One of the prominent examples is the Mortal Kombat film. But slowly things are changing as the makers are focusing more on the content and providing something interesting while staying true to the source material. Over the years, several films have taken a leaf out of a video game. These include Warcraft, Rampage, Sonic the Hedgehog, and The Angry Birds, etc.
