Colin Farrell still has his hopes up for the Sgt Rock film, as the actor expressed his hopes that the film eventually gets made as it has a really good script. The actor sat down for a chat with Josh Horowitz on the Happy, Sad Confused podcast, Farrell made sure to open up on the film as he said:
"I know nothing about it, brother. I was going to do it with Luca [Guadagnino.] We spoke about it a couple of times and had some really nice chats. God that was a fantastic script, I wonder what's happening with it. I was gonna do it with Luca [Guadagnino], and we spoke a couple of times, but I have no idea where it is now. It should be made."
The film received much excitement from fans but disappointment followed in April 2025, when multiple outlets reported that the film had been canceled. Shortly after the film's cancellation, James Gunn did an interview with Rolling Stone where he opened up about a recently canceled project, which many connected to Sgt Rock. Speaking about the cancellation, Gunn said:
"We just killed a project. Everybody wanted to make the movie. It was greenlit, ready to go. The screenplay wasn’t ready. And I couldn’t do a movie where the screenplay’s not good."
More details about Sgt Rock
Sgt Rock. first saw development reports when Luca Guadagnino, the Oscar nominated director set his eyes on the film's live action version. Announced in September 2024, he was all set to team up with frequent collaborator Justin Kuritzkes for the script. By November, more reports followed, including some that suggested that Daniel Craig might play the titular character in the film. Soon enough, the reports died down, and it was revealed that Craig was never a part of the project.
Colin Farrell was then attached to the project, who has already played The Penguin in DC. Cameras were all set to roll out this year, but the film faced an abrupt halt in April 2025.
The film would have been based on Sergeant Franklin John Rock, better known as Sgt. Rock, who stormed into DC Comics history with Our Army at War #83 in June 1959, created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert. A battle-hardened World War II hero, Rock led Easy Company, a ragtag band that somehow turned up in every major European conflict.
Rock was born in Pittsburgh, once a steel mill worker, he enlisted after Pearl Harbor and rose swiftly through the ranks as his superiors fell. His dog tag read 409966, echoing Kanigher’s own number. Rumored to have fought with “The Big Red One,” Rock’s legacy stretched from North Africa to Italy and beyond.
Time will tell if the Sgt Rock film will ever get made, but if it does, it will be bringing one of the most loved DC characters to life.
