Jaakko Ohtonen will play Jesus in the long-delayed sequel to Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, The Resurrection of the Christ, confirms Variety. Alongside him, Mariela Garriga has been cast as Mary Magdalene in the film. Other than them, Francesco De Vito and Maia Morgenstern have already been cast as Peter and Mary, the mother of Jesus.

Given that this movie is coming over two decades after the original, it is likely to be almost entirely recast. As of this writing, the film is set for release on March 26, 2027, with Lionsgate distributing it.

The Resurrection of the Christ will be a two-part affair, and the second entry is likely to arrive on May 6, 2027.

Mel Gibson is directing and has co-written the movie with Randall Wallace, who is known for Braveheart (1995), which was also directed by Mel Gibson, who also played the lead in that movie.

Who played these The Resurrection of the Christ characters in the original film?

Jim Caviezel, who is known for his roles in movies like Sound of Freedom (2023), G.I. Jane (1997), The Thin Red Line (1998), and more, was in the lead in The Passion of the Christ.

Monica Bellucci was in the role of Mary Magdalene. The actress has appeared in a range of movies, including Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001), Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra (2002), The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, and more. She was in Spectre (2015) as well, which made her the oldest Bond girl to appear in the popular spy franchise.

Francesco De Vito and Maia Morgenstern have been recast, as they appeared in the 2004 film as Peter and the mother of Jesus, respectively.

De Vito has appeared in TV series, including projects like Invisible Boys (2025), The Claremont Murders (2023), Bang Bang Baby (2022), and more. His appearances in movies include The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015), The Vatican (2013), To Rome with Love, and more.

Morgenstern has mostly appeared in Romanian and Hungarian films. Her appearances in movies include The House from the Dream (1993), The Man of the Day (1997), Mansfeld (2006), and more. Her English-language movie appearances other than The Passion of the Christ include Nostradamus (1994), Dark Prince: The True Story of Dracula (2000), The Fence, and more.

The Passion of the Christ was a huge commercial success but was panned by critics and became controversial at the time. However, the performances were praised. It made $612 million against a $30 million budget at the global box office.

We have to wait and see if The Resurrection of the Christ can surpass it.
