The sequel will be directed by Mel Gibson and will be released in two parts. Both releases will take place in 2027 and will be helmed by Lionsgate. Let's look into more details about the forthcoming sequel.

The Resurrection of the Christ to be released in two parts

The Resurrection of the Christ will be released by Lionsgate in two parts. The first part will be released on Good Friday on March 26, 2027, while the second part will be out on May 6, 2027, on Ascension Day.

Both parts will be released with a gap of 40 days, and the days are in line with the film's religious theme. While the first part might get a free release window, the second part might collide with Sony's The Legend of Zelda, which is also eyeing a May release.

The sequel is produced by Mel Gibson and Bruce Davey under the banner of Icon Productions.

The first film, The Passion of the Christ, was written by Gibson and Benedict Fitzgerald. Gibson also produced it with Bruce Davey and Stephen McEveety. Jim Caviezel played the role of Jesus Christ and is expected to reprise the role in the sequel.

Right after its release on February 25, 2004, the film met with a polarizing response. Amid all the controversies, it managed to gross $612.1 million. This feat has made it the most commercially successful Christian film, one of the highest-grossing Independent films, and till last year, it was the highest-grossing R-rated film in the United States.

At the 77th Academy Awards, the film received three nominations in the Best Makeup, Best Original Score, and Best Cinematography categories.

Plot details of the follow-up film have not been revealed yet. As the release date nears, we can expect the makers to reveal more information about the film, including its cast members and crew details.
