Elizabeth Olsen has seen the rise, reign, and supposed decline of the superhero era up close. As Wanda Maximoff, she helped shape one of Marvel's most emotionally charged stories, so when talk of superhero fatigue surfaces, she's not one to dismiss it.

Superhero fatigue, a term that has gained popularity in recent years, refers to the slow decline of superhero films, particularly as some of Marvel's newer projects have seen mixed reviews and a significant decline in performance at the box office. Olsen, however, argues that far from running out of steam, the genre has actually evolved.

Speaking during the Hamptons International Film Festival’s A Conversation With... series, Elizabeth Olsen addresses superhero fatigue and says,

“I mean, these movies aren’t for critics, these movies are for fans... The stories have only gotten better for me, my character. I really enjoyed it. Some people have ongoing television series that they get to return to. Very few, I feel like, get to be a part of franchises that, I know we might culturally get a little bit exhausted by, but there is something about them that becomes very familial.”

She further adds,

“There’s nothing else really like it, and I don’t know that I’ll have [that] again unless it’s for an ongoing show. I do like that kind of consistency. It feels good. I mean, job security feels nice — I think we can all agree on that.”

Is Elizabeth Olsen returning as the Scarlet Witch?

With the MCU teaming up again for Avengers: Doomsday, many names have been missing from the announced cast list, and Elizabeth Olsen is one of them. The actress last played the role of Wanda Maximoff in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which was three years ago. Although she has repeatedly expressed her interest in reprising her role as Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch, there have currently not been any reports that suggest her return.

In the same panel discussion, Elizabeth Olsen also addressed her return to the MCU as she said,

"It is something that I love, and it's something I always want to return to. I think the thing that's been so special about the last five years is I've gotten to do so much with the character that I never thought I would. There are still character through lines that have happened in the comics that I'd love to do that I think fans also want to."

In her last stint as Wanda, aka the Scarlet Witch, she is seen attempting to reach her sons, Billy and Tommy, who exist in other universes. She also gets her hands on the Darkhold, a powerful grimoire that holds dangerous, evil spells that corrupt the readers. As her desire to reunite with her children overpowers her, making her more hostile in the process, Stephen Strange gets involved, along with America Chavez, a girl who can travel across the multiverses.

The film ends with her turning the Darkhold's dark magic upon itself while destroying all copies of the Darkhold across the Multiverse, as it is suggested that she also dies in the process. It is not yet clear if Elizabeth Olsen will return to the MCU, but with the multiverses in effect and different versions of different characters making appearances, it could very well be a possibility.
