The makers announced the title of the upcoming Mario film, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. This was done through the release of a teaser video. The 51-second-long video starts with Mario sleeping under a tree, which is part of a beautiful, lush green garden. We then follow a yellow butterfly that was sitting on his cap as it flies through chipmunks digging holes in the ground. The video ends with the butterfly going into the sky as the film's official title appears.

The film is directed by Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath, while Matthew Fogel is the writer. Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri are producing the film under their banners of Nintendo and Illumination, respectively.

Its voice cast includes:

  • Chris Pratt as Mario
  • Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek
  • Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach
  • Keegan-Michael Key as Toad
  • Charlie Day as Luigi
  • Jack Black as Bowser

The first film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, was also directed by Horvath and Jelenic. Released in 2023, the film mostly received mixed reviews but grossed $1.361 billion. It broke several records, most prominently the most commercially successful film based on a video game. It also received several nominations at the Golden Globe Awards.

The sequel was in the works, but the details were kept under wraps for a long time. In late 2023, Jack Black was asked about its possibilities. He said:

“It has been radio silence. The only chatter has been coming from me, and I don’t even know if I’m allowed to chatter. I’ve been chomping at the bit to get back to business.”

The Super Mario Galaxy will be released theatrically on April 3, 2026, across screens in the United States.
