Larry David recalls cutting straight to the chase when he finally met Paul McCartney at SNL50.
The Curb Your Enthusiasm star recounted his first encounter with the legendary hitmaker during the Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary celebration this February, noting that instead of greeting him, he asked him a bizarre question.
"I was introduced to Paul McCartney," David recalled on the Fly on the Wall podcast. "I said to him, 'Has anyone ever punched you in the mouth?'" He added, "I said, 'Let me ask you a question. Have you ever been hit in the face with a fist? Has anybody ever punched you?'"
One of the show's hosts, David Spade, recalled witnessing the whole conversation during dinner:
"You were sitting right next to Paul," he told David. "You were hilarious. He was a good laugher, too. He was into it. I think he likes having these goofball comics around."
Larry David then reflected on how Paul McCartney responded to his inquiry:
"There was an incident in his youth when he was like 13 or 14, and somebody headbutted him, he told me," the comedian said.
Larry David recalls his first encounter with Paul McCartney as David Spade laments the same:
As reported by Entertainment Weekly, David Spade was not too thrilled about his experience at the dinner festivities. According to him, he "felt embarrassed" because he arranged to meet Grown Ups co-star Chris Rock for a meal, though the latter then strung him along to a party that he "was 100 percent not invited to."
"Paul was very nice," Spade said, adding that it was difficult for him to hear just what he was saying. "Every time Paul gets to a story where he says something, where he's like: 'You know, "Yesterday," the way I came up with it was one night when I was dreaming —', the [waiter] is like, 'Who had potato skins?'"
Spade continued:
"He goes, 'And that's how I came with "Yesterday."' I go, 'Uh-huh.' Then he goes, 'The last thing John ever said to me —' 'Hey, coconut shrimp! Hot plate, hot plate!' I'm like, 'Goddamn, dude, I'm missing every — I couldn't pay enough to hear Paul McCartney talk about this s---!'"
Just this March, David Spade reflected on the encounter, expressing disappointment at the waiters once again:
"There’s like 12 people. So, I can’t really see him," he said of Paul McCartney. "So, now it’s a sickening cranking my head (all the time). I’m a plus one, obviously. He’s being very sweet, but it’s hard to see him. I’m killing my neck. Every time he starts telling a story honestly about ‘Yesterday’ or literally everything you want to hear from him, the waiters who were over helping us, there was like a team of seven, (would suddenly show up)."
He added,
"He would go ‘And the best thing about ‘Yesterday’ was’ and the guy’s like ‘Coconut shrimp!’ He puts his arm in, and I go, ‘Yes thank you. That’s for them’ And I look back, and (Paul) goes, ‘And that’s the whole story.’ And ‘With Let It Be…’ And then ‘Who had potato skins?’ And I’m like, ‘We don’t need to top off the waters for a few seconds.’ It was like an assembly line of arms to block stories. I’m like, ‘Guys, I just want to hear this guy say literally anything.’"
