"There’s not all that amount of time left."

More from the interview, as Joanna Lumley weighs in on life and the great beyond

Joanna Lumley, who celebrates her birthday today, on 1 May, as she turns seventy-nine, said that she has realized that she must not waste her time, as she is consumed with thoughts of her time fast approaching. In her interview with My Weekly, she said:

"All kinds of my beloved friends are beginning to leave. As you near the top of the hill you suddenly think. My time must be coming quite soon and I don’t want to have wasted a minute of being on this beautiful planet.”

The two-time BAFTA winner further added that when she was younger, she used to feel anxious over mortality and what was going to happen next, but with time, she has realized that one must not worry about such things. Lumley said:

"I used to panic when I was young, but as I’ve got older I’ve started literally to live day to day.

Moreover, the Absolutely Fabulous actress further said that with wisdom and age, she has understood the things which matter to her, but added even when she was younger, she knew better opportunities were on the horizon as she aged, and always looked forward to growing old. She added:

"With age, you work out what matters. I always knew that good stuff would come along when I was older. When I was 18, I longed to be 30. When I was 30, longed to be 50. We mustn’t be led into thinking getting old is bad. Growing old is good.’

But in the interview, she also added a message for the youth of today, whom she referred to in a previous interview as people who did not wish to put in the hard work to achieve success. In her 2023 interview, the Tony Award-winning actress shared her perspective on the youth of today, who, according to her, only believe in a fast track to success. She said:

"I’m afraid the answer is: that’s the way to do it. I’m afraid that’s how it works. We’ve got to try to get the young to understand that it’s a tough old world. It’s lovely, but it’s tough. You’ve got to be ready, resilient, brave… and humble. You’ve got to understand that the world can do very well without you. Without any of us!”

In her interview with My Weekly, her message to the younger generation is to find time to do things away from social media, as she believes it has destroyed their ability to communicate. She said:

"My big message to the young that you need time in your head. I’m so afraid we’re going to breed a generation who don’t know the world and don’t know how to talk."

Back in 2022, Joanna Lumley had said that she had no plans of slowing down or retiring, and would only do so when opportunities dry up or her health no longer permits her to do so.
