According to a recent article by US Weekly, actress Gabby Windey voiced her distrust of Sydney Sweeney's new jeans campaign.
"I just watched the Sydney Sweeney ad, well, the one on her Instagram, which is apparently mild compared to everything else. We’ve all seen the commentary, and yes, it’s terrifying.” Gabby Windey said a TikTok video on July 29
"But also in the ad, they do a close-up ass shot, and she’s not filling out the jeans. She doesn’t have that good of jeans. These jeans are doing nothing for her ass. G-E-N-E or J-E-A-N, either one. So I beg to differ [on] the whole thing.” Windey continues.
The campaign by the American denim brand 'American Eagle' features Sydney Sweeney and promotes the brand's new collection for their fall edition.
When Sydney Sweeney's collaboration with American Eagle launched about a week ago, it immediately caused a stir. Numerous internet users accused the corporation of pushing eugenics and said that Sweeney, 27, was being oversexualized by the brand.
The phrase that stirred a controversy is Sweeney's "great genes." In fact, Sweeney is shown standing in front of a banner that reads, "Sydney Sweeney has great genes," before the word "genes" is struck out and replaced with "jeans" in one clip that has received over 1.1 million views on American Eagle's Instagram page.
About Sydney Sweeney's latest controversy
Clothing retailer giant American Eagle has dropped their new campaign featuring Sydney Sweeney-- an acclaimed American actress who rose to fame for her work in Euphoria, Anyone But You, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
The tagline for the campaign, "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans," plays on the word "genes," which inevitably makes viewers consider the blonde, blue-eyed woman's genetic makeup.
In one video, Sydney says “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color” before the camera pans to her blue eyes “My jeans are blue.”
The campaign sparked debates on social media. Some netizens claimed that American Eagle was making fun of eugenics. American Eagle and a Sweeney publicist have not commented on these claims as of now.
The ad is for American Eagle's latest fall collection, which includes "The Sydney Jean," a limited-edition denim jacket made in partnership with Sweeney.
According to the campaign, all sales proceeds from the jeans' butterfly image, which stands for domestic violence awareness, will be sent to the Crisis Text Line, a nonprofit that provides free, round-the-clock mental health help.
“Sweeney’s girl next door charm and main character energy — paired with her ability to not take herself too seriously — is the hallmark of this bold, playful campaign.” American Eagle wrote on its website, a week before.
Sweeney's advertisements have drawn comparisons to the 1980 Calvin Klein jeans campaign, which Brooke Shields starred in at the age of 15. The brand was accused of sexualizing Shields, who told Vogue in 2021 that she found the criticism "ridiculous."
