In some truly shocking news, a s*x toy was hurled onto the court, subsequently interrupting the live action at a WNBA game, the third time this week. The incident happened during an exciting match between the Indiana Fever and the Los Angeles Sparks on August 5. It appeared to have caught broadcasters off guard as well, as they had to react to the reprehensible act in real time.
"Oh, look out. Something just came onto the floor. An object just flew in as the free throw is being made. It looked like that hit a player, too.”
The player who appears to have been hit by the toy was Sophie Cunningham, an emerging on-court force for the Indiana Fever. A member of the game’s officiating crew eventually removed the item from the court.
WNBA - Unruly fans threaten workplace safety for players
The harsh reality of the current situation is that it appears even worse in context. Somehow, this incident is not isolated and has been happening repeatedly over the past week at WNBA games. Not only is the act extremely vile and insulting, but it also raises concerns about player safety.
The first of these incidents occurred on July 29. During a WNBA game between the Golden State Valkyries and the Atlanta Dream, a toy was thrown onto the hardwood, prompting commentator Morgan Ragan to address the situation immediately.
“Something flies on the court actually from the crowd. And you can see the object... the green thing bounces and it goes to the sideline. We’re not exactly sure where it came from.”
She continued after a brief pause in the action due to a timeout call by one of the teams,
“No room for any of that type of activity. And no one’s picked the object up yet, you guys.”
Once it became apparent what the object was, the announcer’s tone changed.
“Oh my gosh, okay. Okay, inappropriate. Get them out of here, whoever it is [that threw it].”
Then, when the Golden State Valkyries faced the Chicago Sky on August 1, a similar situation unfolded deep into the second half of the game. It even prompted Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham to make her feelings on the matter crystal clear via X.
"stop throwing dildos on the court… you’re going to hurt one of us."
It is important to note that the WNBA’s official Fan Conduct Code states,
“Guests who engage in fighting, throwing objects or attempting to enter the court will be immediately ejected from the arena.”
Unfortunately, it’s hard to identify who is responsible for these acts when so many others are present. In any case, the WNBA will need to tighten security measures to protect its players and preserve the integrity of its sport.
