“This is absolutely insane” - John Mulaney reveals Olivia Munn and kids received death threats over Ms. Rachel comments

Comedian John Mulaney is weighing in on the controversy surrounding comments made by his wife, actress Olivia Munn. On June 11, Mulaney took to his Instagram stories to call out netizens writing ‘threatening messages’ to his wife, and wrote,

“This is absolutely insane and needs to stop. The people doing this are so wildly out of line and so unhelpful to any conversation.”

Mulaney also provided insights into why Munn was being targeted, and wrote,

“An innocent comment my wife Olivia Munn made about what children's programs we like has somehow -unbelievably - been conflated with not caring about the deaths of children in Gaza. Because of this, my wife and my two kids are now receiving violent and threatening comments and messages in her DMs.”

Continuing, Mulaney criticized how Munn’s comments were twisted by the media and netizens, and added,

“You took a nothing comment to a dark and dangerous place. This kind of behavior isn't activism.”

Why is John Mulaney’s wife, Olivia Munn, facing criticism?

On June 8, an article published by People Magazine included comments made by Olivia Munn in relation to the children’s YouTube content creator, Ms. Rachel. During her conversation with the publication, Munn recounted how she doesn’t let her and John Mulaney’s two children watch Ms. Rachel’s content.

Even though the article has since been deleted, E! News reported that Munn said,

“I know kids love [Ms. Rachel], but the thing is, if I can't watch it, I'm not going to spend the rest of my life going crazy. These kid shows drive me crazy.”

Munn’s comments were singled out and covered extensively in the media. Even Ms. Rachel weighed in on the furor caused by Munn’s words and expressed her disappointment with the media coverage.

Ms. Rachel, a composer and early childhood educator, works alongside her husband, Aron Accurso, to run her YouTube channel. She regularly posts educational content for pre-schoolers and toddlers and teaches children to identify colors, shapes, numbers, etc.

Ms. Rachel also advocates for children in Gaza, and in response to the media’s coverage of Munn, she urged netizens to instead talk about her advocacy. In an Instagram post, Ms. Rachel wrote,

“I’d rather you cover me advocating for kids in Gaza who are literally starving, largest cohort of child amputees in modern history, thousands & thousands killed - no medical care, no education, no homes… do better!!!”

Simultaneously, Ms. Rachel expressed that she was sending her love to Munn and her family.

John Mulaney has always supported Olivia Munn

John Mulaney and Olivia Munn share two children: a son, Malcolm, and a daughter, Méi. Munn, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023, spoke to People Magazine earlier and expressed her joy at seeing her husband deal with their children.

Munn returned to the screen with Apple TV+’s Your Friends & Neighbors. Mulaney opened up to People Magazine about Munn returning to work, and said,

"For the past three years Liv was just giving everything she had to her health and to being the brightest and silliest mom and partner…Then Malcolm and I and then Méi Méi got the chance to see our Olivia just expand and give her whole mind and heart to us and to doing this show."

Continuing, he added,

"To see her come back from such a long break, to watch her prepare for this role while still in the middle of exhausting cancer treatment, and then like everyone else to watch week after week as she crafts this totally original, really funny, really staggering character in Sam … I’m just blown away.”

Olivia Munn and John Mulaney tied the knot in 2024, around three years after they began dating.
