Mila Kunis will soon be seen in Rian Johnson's eagerly awaited Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. She revealed what working with Daniel Craig was like. Speaking on September 6 at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Mila Kunis acknowledged that she had no idea what to anticipate from the former James Bond star.
Before filming with Craig, Mila Kunis revealed to PEOPLE that her first reaction was:
'This could go either which way."
She added:
"This is going to be a really lovely production, or we're going to be in our own [bubbles, and] it's going to be fine."
The bond was comforting, according to Mila Kunis, even though she had previously collaborated with Craig's wife, Rachel Weisz, on the 2013 fantasy epic Oz the Great and Powerful. Kunis recalled:
"She is such a wonderful human that I was like, 'There's no way that [Daniel] won't be a wonderful person to work with."
Since her "character is very much tied to his character," she had her doubts.
Her worries were immediately eased, Kunis continued:
"Daniel set the best tone for the crew and the cast within the first two hours."
Mila Kunis' experience working with Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig
Mila Kunis praised both Craig and writer-director Rian Johnson for fostering a warm and welcoming environment during production. She said:
"When you step onto the set every morning, it's just like a lovely, 'We've got this, we're going to have fun, we're going to do it, we're going to work hard, but we're going to respect one another.' "
She added talking about Daniel Craig. Craig, who is reprising his role as detective Benoit Blanc for the third time, is said to have been able to maintain a professional and humorous attitude while juggling a demanding role. She pointed out at his ability to handle monologues and heavy dialogues without losing any focus:
"And it was every single day the same. And he's got a lot to do. I mean, he is in everything. And there's monologue after monologue. And this man was capable of staying sharp and being so professional, and knew exactly how to toe the line of having fun with people."
Daniel Craig's reflections on returning as Benoit Blanc
On the movie's debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada. Craig referred to his return to Johnson's murder mystery universe as a "lucky" chance, though the actor did not provide any details on when his last appearance as Blanc was, but it's not soon. He told PEOPLE:
"Who told you that? Listen, I don't know. Rian hasn't written anything because we're getting this movie out ...[If he] writes another script and it's as good as I think it probably will be, then it's an easy decision."
He added:
"How lucky am I to get to play something like this? ... That's all I can think of when I think about this character. I mean, I've played [James] Bond and now I'm suddenly playing [Knives Out character] Benoit Blanc. It's dumb luck. I'm very lucky."
Rian Johnson himself told Variety in an interview that he'd love to continue doing this:
"If each one of these can really be what Agatha Christie did, if it can be not just in a totally new location and a new cast, but also trying something exciting, I'll keep doing it as long as Daniel [Craig] and I are having a good time. I'll keep making these as long as they let me."
Alongside Daniel Craig and Mila Kunis, Josh O'Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church will also be joining them.
Johnson's third Knives Out film comes after the critically praised films Glass Onion (2022) and Knives Out (2019). The latest instalment will be premiering on November 26, 2025, on the big screens and will stream on Netflix from December 12, 2025, onwards.
