After months of fan theories, calendar watching, and waiting, Thunderbolts* finally has its Disney+ date, Variety reported. The MCU’s most chaotic squad of antiheroes will crash into houses worldwide on August 27, 2025, exactly 117 days after its May 2 theatrical debut. That’s a record of the longest gap between a Marvel movie hitting theaters and dropping on streaming.

Directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts* takes a different route, unlike most superhero movies. It is sharp edges, bad decisions, and uneasy alliances all wrapped in one mission that probably should have been vetoed. Packed with familiar faces and new wildcards, the film dives headfirst into betrayal, banter, and the kind of fights that feel personal.

The Disney+ release is set to reignite every debate, theory thread, and moment that’s been brewing since opening weekend. For anyone who missed it in theaters, this is the fans' chance to meet Marvel’s most unpredictable team yet.

For everyone else, it is the perfect excuse to rewatch and hunt for the little details that could point to where the MCU’s morally grey future is heading.

More details about Thunderbolts*

Thunderbolts* rolled into the MCU in 2025, rocking the idea that heroes don’t always wear capes; sometimes, they have just made spectacularly poor life choices. It is Phase Five’s finale and the 36th film in the franchise, directed by Jake Schreier, with a screenplay tag-team of Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo.

The cast includes Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Julia Lewis-Dreyfus.

Marvel first teased its formation back in 2021, and by mid-2022, Schreier and Pearson were locked down, and casting kicked into gear. Rewrites by Lee Sung Jin rolled in by early 2023, and although Hollywood’s strikes threw some curveballs, filming kicked off in February 2024 across Atlanta, Utah, and even Kuala Lumpur before wrapping in June.

Thunderbolts* first premiered in London’s Leicester Square on April 22, and the official U.S. debut arrived May 2. What unfolds in the film's plot is an adrenaline-pumped mash-up: A ragtag squad of anti-heroes coerced into a dangerous mission by CIA boss Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) until things spiral into full-on betrayal, and they are forced to band together.

Enter Bob Reynolds (Lewis Pullman), a super-powered wildcard whose trauma evolves into the Void: A dark, psychic crisis that plunges New York into a hallucinatory nightmare. In the end, the ragtag team emerges, reluctantly rebranded, via that sneaky asterisk, as the “New Avengers.”

Critics dug the emotional punches and gritty humor, but box office numbers lagged behind expectations, $382.4 million globally is solid, but not spectacular by MCU standards. Still, that mid-credit tease, with New Avengers squaring off against Sam Wilson’s squad and a looming “4,” embellished alien threat, props up what might be the wildest next chapter yet.

Thunderbolts* will be available to stream on Disney+ from August 27, 2025.
