Michael Walsh, West Haven’s public relations information coordinator, released a statement on the city's Facebook Page:

“Unfortunately, due to the weather forecast and in consultation with the fireworks company and our public safety officials, we are rescheduling tonight’s fireworks display to the rain date of Saturday, July 5, at 9:15 p.m..”

He continued:

“With the report of potential rain, wind or lightning leading up to the display, bringing thousands of viewers to the beach, causes a public safety concern. All previously communicated information by the police, including road and parking lot closures, along with beach rules will apply on Saturday.”

He concluded:

“Thank you for your patience. We look forward to Saturday’s show.”

For the rescheduled date, all previously announced arrangements pertaining to beach rules, parking lot closures, and road closures will still apply. Authorities are asking locals and guests to abide by the same rules that were first set forth for Thursday's event.

From Amusement Park to Fireworks Destination

The show was expected to bring in a huge crowd for the country's Independence Day celebration at Savin Rock.

Earlier, it was the location of the Savin Rock Amusement Park, a famous beach resort in the area that opened in the late 19th century. In the 20th century, it developed into a general entertainment park before closing in 1966, which had a fireworks show from time to time. Today, the park serves as a cycling and walking trail along the west side of the New Haven Harbor beachfront. Now, people still continue this tradition of enjoying the show from this beachfront.

Although some people may be temporarily disappointed by the postponement, city authorities stressed that public safety is still the first concern.

What Attendees Should Know for Saturday

On the rescheduled day, all previously announced parking restrictions, beach rules, and traffic regulations will still be in force. Public safety precautions and police presence will also be maintained to guarantee participants a secure and simple experience.

Residents and guests are being advised by officials to:

  • To guarantee parking and prevent traffic, arrive early.
  • For beach sitting, bring chairs or blankets.
  • Before leaving, stay hydrated and keep an eye on the weather.
